School not running Spanish A-level

DD applied to her school sixth form for A-levels and has been offered a place (subject to her getting reasonable GCSEs). She had been planning on studying Spanish, Economics and Politics. However, school told her today that they will no longer be running Spanish A-level next year due to poor uptake amongst the cohort. She now wants to leave the school and go to another 6th form but hadn’t applied anywhere else and applications are closed so looking for advice…

Apply to the other schools anyway. Official applications might be closed but generally kids do a load of shuffling about right up till the end of September.

thank you - we will do that

Phone admission in the college of her choice and explain the situation. They’ll be able to help you consider options and applications.

Agree with both replies.
But not sure there will be a plethora of schools or colleges where she can do that combination.

Interesting, that would be an easy combination to achieve where live.

Sorry to hear that OP - sadly, it's always a risk, and your school should ideally have encouraged its students to apply elsewhere as backup.

It's not just low numbers that can prevent courses from running. I'm a school governor, and know that our school will soon need to tell Year 9 and Year 11 students expecting to do a certain subject option next year that it won't be running, simply because the current teacher has resigned and we we haven't been able to recruit a suitable replacement. This will be happening in other schools nationwide due to the current recruitment crisis.

Sadly )very sadly) MFL A levels are increasingly not run due to poor take up. In ds2’s year, his school was the only one in the city running A level German. In dd’s year, the only MFL offered was French.

She may need to compromise on her other choices if Spanish is key - my dcs’ school doesn’t offer economics and others don’t do politics.

Thanks for all the advice. I rang a few schools/colleges and they said DD can make a late application and is likely to succeed because they want to boost the numbers in the A-level Spanish class (so perhaps this problem is common). At two of them though, there’s no politics so she will have to think of another A-level so might do History instead
