Reporting School to Ofsted

7 replies

Has anyone ever reported a school to Ofsted? What is the process like? Does one fill in a form, or can only discuss matters beforehand with a human being? Are there any advice services or charities that can assist with help and advice?

Ofsted will refer you to the school's complaints policy and will offer advice.

They generally don't get involved in individual complaints.

Thanks. That is good general advice. This particular case does not involve an individual complaint, as such, but is a more general matter. A few people in education have suggested it needs to be reported to Ofsted. Sorry for my vagueness. I am just interested in the process. I am guessing that not many people do report to Ofsted given the narrow scope of what they can investigate/deal with.

There is a narrow element of safeguarding that can trigger an inspection but I've never known it happen.

My MIL who used to be a head can't even remember what the criteria were.

However, they should be able to give advice as to where to direct your concerns locally.

www.gov.uk/complain-about-school

This is the procedure.
I believe there is an email and a phone number you can use for reporting childcare providers but not sure about schools.

If you follow the link to state school it will lead you to an online form to complete.
However it does state that you need to have gone through the school's official complaints procedure first, and possibly the DfE depending on the nature of the incident.

Thank you for your responses. I shall look into the other options to ensure I am speaking to the right people. I wonder if there is some sort of "triage" service where I can discuss the issues without having to compile and submit the full report. It could save all parties a lot of time.

@MoleOfKingTyre , start with the school's complaints policy.

@MoleOfKingTyre
You should start with the complaints policy. Unfortunately there’s no middle man to complain to. You might be an academy or LA school but they won’t have a person to advocate for you. Ofsted can respond to certain complaints but most have to be escalated. Can you give any idea about what the complaint is about? It might be possible to point you in the right direction.
