Leavers Ball (Prom) in May

My DD’s school is hosting their leavers ball on the Friday before the Upper Sixth go on study leave. Is this normal, I thought Proms were always in July post-exams but according to DD it’s always in May. Any insights?

Different schools do things differently.
By doing it in May it enables people to go off on holiday as they finish exams.

DD's school always has them after the exams.

Schools can do whatever they want really. It seems to be more common around here that schools hold their proms at the very end of June or beginning of July when all exams are definitely out of the way, but hopefully before everyone has scattered for the summer. It does seem to make more sense that way as it's a true celebration for everyone. Then all the usual hours of talk about hair and nails and make up isn't so much in the way of the final weeks of classes and revision.
