Delayed speech

My son is 2.5 yrs old, he only speaks about 25 words, his sisters school said they can’t take him unless it improves in the next 10 weeks.

We are getting him a speech therapist, I was wondering does anyone know of other things we can do to help him improve quickly? Are there any good apps or books or online resources you have used and have really helped?

Thanks

My Ds speech didn't get going until 2.5, you might not be too far off.
Being at nursery around his peers helped. He also enjoyed Yakka dee on YouTube.

My ds had 10 words on his second birthday and they were ones only l could understand. By his third birthday he was nearly fluent. They all progress at different stages.
Read short stories and repeat the same ones again and again asking him what's in the picture. Get those books with only one picture on a page and go through them every day. Should find some in the library. Every time you do something/ give him something say the word clearly. Repeat as often as you can.
Little rhymes and getting him to say them. Could watch on utube. Repeat in the car making sure he joins in.
One tip l heard was putting things he likes up high so he has to ask for it..not in a mean way but just to encourage him to speak. Also lots of encouragement when he does use his words Make sure his older sibling is not speaking for him.

I would recommend taking a look at the speech delay app Pippin. It has a speech course which gives you a speech therapy technique and speech game to try out each week.

I would also recommend the app Khan Academy Kids. This is more good for educational language such as learning letters and numbers so might be a bit early to introduce to your little one yet!

Is this a state school? Why would he be starting in 10 weeks if he’s only 2? They can’t refuse him enter based on his speech.

Have you spoken to the HV? Ask if they’ll refer to SaLT.

A friend’s DS had delayed speech, the best tip she got from the speech therapist was to respond to requests for things by insisting he used his words. Your son may be different of course but this worked a treat with their son, if he wanted a biscuit he had previously pointed to the biscuit tin and got one. New routine was he would point, they would say ‘so you want a biscuit?, say ‘I would like a biscuit please’ and they had to not give in if he refused to talk, to start with it was just one word,, then further along the full sentence. Before this they just knew his needs and responded. Once he started using words to ask for things the rest came.
