Reception Class Learning

Hi all,

So my son is doing great at reading and maths according to the teacher, however when it comes to writing he is not doing so great, teacher said she doesn't know if he finds it boring or if he knows it so is not really interested but could and should be doing better.

The thing is I know he does prefer maths and reading over writing, we see the same at home but he does write little notes to me (even though spellings are incorrect) I can understand what the note says and his writing is clear and tidy I can read it. When he has imaginative play he makes little signs like exit. I am not sure what to expect for him, he is 4 going to 5 in a month. Should he be doing more than this at this age? Also teacher said his verbal reasoning skills are not great, are children expected to do verbal reasoning at reception? Am I being nieve? Should he be doing all of these things at 4? If so what can I do to support this? Please help this worried mumma out. Thanks

Nothing to worry about. Reception class teacher chasing stock targets when each child develops individually. She means well but don't fret at all. I wish some of my older students wrote as a part of play no matter how it was spelt! Children need to fully develop coordination skills to write fluently and at four he's still doing that. I'd be really surprised if the rest of his class are writing notes to their parents!

He should be able to write a sentence with support by the end of reception. He is beyond that now. Sounds like he is doing very well.

If you get a chance spend a day or half day helping in the class. You will see the vast difference between the children and realise that your child is actually doing fine. He’s 4 seriously don’t worry, some of the class will be better and some will struggle to hold a pencil properly. It’s not a contest, let him just enjoy being 4 soon to be 5 and his writing will get better.

They're only 4 months in so don't give it a second thought

Thank you all so much for your comments, I feel better for it. The teacher just made me feel like he is failing and I'm a bad mum! Feeling reassured by you all and your comments make absolute sense he is only 4 coming up to 5 and only been jn school 4 months.

She may just have been saying that his writing lagged behind his maths and reading, not that it was actually bad.
