The Mount (Huddersfield) or Hipperholme Grammar (Halifax)

Anyone from the Yorkshire area know anything about these schools?

We really like the staff at Hipperholme, however it’s not a prep school as would like DS to get into a state grammar for 11+.

The Mount, don’t know much about it so don’t know if he’ll be happy there. However their focus is the 11+.

Gleddings, huge waiting list so out of the question.

thank you

Urghh. If I were to do my time again, I'd actually move slightly to get better independent schools as there is a real dearth in this area 😔 And somehow fewer independent schools = lower quality than you get in Leeds, Manchester, York areas etc. There must be a sweet spot somewhere though 🤷🏻‍♀️

But I quite understand that for prep, you don't want to travel too far.

If you can't get into The Gleddings, it's very slim pickings. Are you going to stay on the waiting list?

The Mount is run for profit by a subsidiary of Nord Anglia, Hipperholme is not and is run not-for-profit and on a shoe string really. Although The Gleddings is run for profit too so it doesn't necessarily follow it's a poorly run place. Huddersfield Grammar? That's a Cognita school.

And I personally wouldn't send to Rishworth/Heathfield if it was completely free. That is how strongly I feel about that.

How about a good village primary with a lot of enrichment and extension? Although you'd need to get into one with a history of passing the 11+. My local village school doesn't send anyone and that culture really permeates through the school so again, I understand if you've discounted that.

If it were me now, I'd be visiting the mount again.

I would suggest Huddersfield Grammar
The Mount almost closed a couple of years ago and I think parents had to buy it, not sure how the finances are now.
Gleddings is a Grammar hot house and I know their fees shot up recently
I am surprised about PPs comments about Rishworth as I hear some very positive things about it and i know a few teachers there
I don’t know much about Hipperholme but I thought it was from Y7 only

@Hoppinggreen Gleddings fees remain lower than most private schools in the area. It is completely non-selective and has NO entrance exam and takes people of all abilities. It has an amazing Head and her educational approach means that for over a decade every child has got into their first choice school. It’s music, arts and sports are also fantastic. It has a huge waitlist for a reason, and also won no.1 Prep School in England as selected by the Times. It just opened a nursery and has had significant investment from the new owners: Forfar Education. We think the school is Amazing and would highly recommend it.

Hi

Can anyone divulge where pupils study for A levels once they complete their gcse’s at Huddersfield Grammar School? Is there a preferred sixth form or college such as Greenhead College or perhaps Crossley Heath sixth form in Halifax?

Any information would be most useful in helping to make decisions.

Much appreciated.

They generally go to Greenhead or New College, mostly Greenhead. None in DDs year went to Crossleys but some do I think
Its results are amongst the top 6 th form colleges in The UK

Aimhigherstill · 24/05/2023 10:12

Is that because they don’t get in as it’s competitive or is there preferential treatment for other schools (ie not preferred as attended HGS)?

Hoppinggreen · 24/05/2023 10:16

I can only go on the people I know but they just don’t tend to apply. I doubt it’s due to not being academic enough as HGS GCSE results are usually very similar to Crossleys. DD looked at it and would certainly have got a place but she didn’t fancy it
I think geography plays a part and also they are looking for a different 6th form experience to school.
