Additional maths

My son is in year 10, he has been guided by couple of teachers he can take additional maths.
I as a parent have below question

1. it will add little more work/stress, but what is the advantage in terms of degree Admission/A level
2. Is it really worth it? What are the disadvantages if he scores less on the numeracy paper, he will take next year [earlier than others]?

Both of mine did additional maths and it meant that A Level maths wasn't as big a jump up as it was for others.
