GCSE Appeals

Does anyone have any experience of asking for GCSE grades to be reviewed? DS missed an A grade in two subjects by a couple of points and I was wondering whether to ask for it to be reconsidered. Seems like a complicated process though. Any experiences appreciated

It's not complicated, but it does cost money. It needs to be done through the school, so contact them.

Lid it having a detrimental effect on his next steps - ie, stoping him being accepted on the college course he wants? If not I just wouldn't see it as an issue.

If you pop onto the Secondary board there are a few threads running where this is covered. Are you in Wales or doing iGCSEs?

MrsHamlet · 27/08/2022 12:34

There are several stages and I'm not clear where you are in the process so forgive me if I'm telling you what you already know.
1 Requesting priority scripts - it's free with aqa this year. Other boards may charge. They come back to the centre and someone in centre who knows what they're doing should look over them before stage 2. Some boards/levels will do this electronically.
2 requesting a review of scripts. Costs per paper. There's a time scale for this which varies by priority. They get reviewed (some boards/papers electronically) and the clocks starts when the review goes in. The result of the review goes back to the centre.
3 an appeal if there are grounds. That's got to be done within 30 days of the review result and costs.
All of these have to be handled by the centre.

Oh thank you I'll have a look at the secondary school board.

Not in Wales

He's not sure what he wants to do next so wanting to give him the best chance possible for whatever he chooses

Thanks all!

You may find that a remark is little more than a clerical check, to ensure they added marks for each answer and each page. It may not be another marker reviewing the paper. There is a fee but if the grade changes that is refunded.

denysedenyse · 27/08/2022 12:51

Just remember he could get marked less than he currently has too!

There's no such thing as a remark.
A review of marking includes a clerical check and a full review of the marking of the full paper.
Some papers can just have a clerical check.

Thank you all 🙂

If requesting scripts make sure to request the copy (not original). It’s quite possible to gain (or lose) a couple of marks on a marking check.
