Australian with choice of 3 unis in UK and no idea. HELP pls!

Asking on behalf of my son who is doing a university exchange semester next year . The 3 uni's that fit in with his law subjects are Reading, Liverpool and Glasgow. I've never been to any of these areas but I said I would ask if anyone here has an idea . Basically he wants to know which would likely be the best thought of upon his return to Australia ; and which would be the most fun. Also anything he should know as 21yo living there for 6 months. I am jealous and have offered to come over in his suitcase but I don't think I'd fit. Thanks !

Glasgow is the best of those 3 for law by a long way. I’d also recommend Glasgow for a fun exchange experience, as well as Liverpool. Reading is a dull city albeit close to London & Heathrow.

Providing it is Uni resits of Liverpool and University of Glasgow, then either of those two. Both cities have several universities though.

NeVer heard of Reading University or it being a great historical or fun city like the other two.

I would say Liverpool. I don't know much about studying Law there but the university and city as a whole is great - lots of students, very vibrant with many things to do. Second choice would be Glasgow. Reading is much smaller and not as well known.

Liverpool and Glasgow are both beautiful, architecturally stunning, fun cities. They can also both be a bit rough. Choose where you live carefully, don't do anything stupid.

Reading has an excellent reputation for law. Always highly rated within Uk tables for that particular subject and several others.

depends what else he wants. Liverpool and Glasgow are much bigger cities whereas reading is a campus university and regularly wins environmental/green flag awards for the beautiful campus. But it’s not right in the middle of a big city (although the town centre is very easy walking distance or bus). So just depends what kind of area he would prefer.

also other obvious factor to consider is proximity to London and to Heathrow which are both within 30 mins from Reading. But if he’s not particularly fussed about London then doesnt really matter!

Ps. Yea forgot to say, reading has fewer rough areas than the other two cities but probably also more expensive to live in for rent etc.

Scots law and English law are different. If he wants to come and practice in either country it might be wise to pick the uni there.

It's a long time since I lived in Scotland but back in the day many Glaswegian students lived at home which changed the student experience quite a bit.

Biased as a Glasgow graduate here, but it really is a great city to study in. Music/culture/sporty outdoorsy stuff within spitting distance, and it’s good for law. I loved it there and have carried around a big Glasgow shaped hole in my heart ever since I left! Friendliest place I’ve ever lived, too.

He will be living on campus ( in halls?) . If that makes a difference. He is super excited. I will be coming over to visit him at some stage and am super excited too.

I feel exactly the same way about Liverpool.

I'm not sure anyone feels that way about Reading...

I am passing all this on to him. Seems like any of the 3 will be good but needs to be careful where he goes ( as in any big city really - he will be coming from Sydney) and ta for pointing out the scots/english law thing. I'm assuming he had thought of that but maybe not.

Glasgow is a great city and a great uni but if he wants to do any exploring of the rest of the uk it is very far away!

Reading is close to London and Heathrow. It is out of town in a leafy suburb.

Liverpool is right in the centre, a very well thought of uni, absolutely loads to do in the city and well placed for visiting the rest of the uk.

Maybe I should pop over first and check them out. 😂They all sound great.

Liverpool would be the best shout or reading as close to london but reading itself is dull. He’ll have a fab time in Liverpool- great nightlife!

If it's only 6 months, I'd go for Reading. I know the town doesn't have the most exciting reputation, but a campus uni would be easier to slot into. And it's really convenient for London.

Liverpool has lots of theatre, music, museums, art galleries etc
It has historical stuff, two excellent football teams etc
Readingd's big selling point is that it is a good place for getting to other places like london etc

Glasgow would be my pick, it's a very well-regarded University and a really fun city to live in. PP who pointed out that Scots and English law are different is correct, but if he's just doing an exchange year he's not going to come away with a qualification to practice anyway.

Another shout for Liverpool! I would stress the English / Scots law / it will make a massive difference!

Liverpool is close to Manchester and both cities have a great student population! I'm biased though I studied in Liverpool!

What time of year? Short daylight hours and v cold in Glasgow in the winter.

Just not Reading, maybe academically good but really not a fun city! If he’s outdoorsy then L and G have both got good access to some gorgeous countryside. Reading less so.

Glasgow has a separate course for Scots law. As long as he wasn't on that one then it makes no difference being in Scotland.
My DS loved his time at Glasgow (not law though)

Time of year will be first semester next year ( Jan - June?) I may have that a bit wrong.
