Schools for 12-13 yo with German Language

Hi All,

We are relocating to Bedford / Milton Keynes area from Germany for my husband's work at Cranfield university.

Do you know if there is any school where there is an option to learn German as a second language? We have lived one year here in Germany. It would be a shame if the children forget what they have learned so far.

Thank you for the help in advance

Are you looking for private or state - both Bedford and BMS do German as an option but they are private in Bedford. There is a German Saturday school in MK near the Waitrose.

I am looking for a state school. The Saturday school is a good option; thank you for the info

Milton Keynes Academy offers German (disclaimer: I know literally nothing else about it so have no idea whether or not it's a good school in general)

If you are looking for mid-year entry (which means entry at any point other than in the main admissions round for year 7), then it may be more a question of which school has a place available, rather than choosing which school to send your DC to. If you apply to any state school and are turned down because the year group is already full, though, you do have the right to appeal the decision, though, and the availability of teaching I'm a specific MFL would be a reasonable reason to cite.

MK Academy is not great. 25% grade 5 and above in maths and English is lower than most Bucks secondary modern schools.

I would see what schools actually have places. You might find you don’t have much choice but I agree your quest is worthwhile.,

You'd get more relevant replies if you put Milton Keynes in the title. You might be able to ask MNHQ to add this for you.

I don't know anything about MK schools. However, having noticed that a PP commented that MK Academy is not a great school owing to lower than average attainment, I thought I'd check its Progress 8 score. This is also lower than average (-0.36).

You can search for school performance data and links to OFSTED reports etc. by school name, postcode etc on this site:

It's worth bearing in mind that the data is only as recent as 2019 owing to a Covid-related disruption to exams etc. so any of the schools may have improved or worsened in the past three years.

The 20/21 Data is suspect and other comparable schools will have shifted too. Not sure what Ousedale in Newport Pagnell offers. German is getting more and more difficult to find outside academic schools. Would DC be good enough to see if the Royal Latin school in Buckingham has a space? She would need to take an entry test but they do German and it’s a possibility. It’s a grammar and if you live in south west MK it’s doable.
