Wells Cathedral School Y9 Boarding

My DS is starting at WCS as a boarder in September with a music scholarship. I'd love to hear from others there and would appreciate practical advice on school uniform etc - can I get away with M&S? - and any other useful tips about the school especially with regard to music and boarding. Thanks!

I was a matron at WCS for 3 years, in a boys boarding house; I only left a few months ago.

It's a lovely school, I really miss my boys! My boarding house had a piano in it and it was lovely to hear them playing on it.

With regard to uniform you'll be fine with M&S for trousers and shirts.

That's really lovely to know! We're still waiting to hear what house he's in. One of my queries was about how mobile phones etc are managed at Wells. I know several other boarding schools have really cracked down on screen time with smart phones and wondered how Wells managed this and controlling internet access?

There is also a great second hand uniform sale that is very popular - lots of bargains and there should be one to coincide with the start of term.

My DC (boarding and musician) is a bit younger, so I’m not sure if mobiles are treated the same way. Screen time is limited to set times and not in dorms, but they also have access to a landline. The signal is poor though!

Phones are taken away at night. That doesn't stop some of them using burner phones though 🤣. But in my house if they were found to have done that then their proper phone would be taken for a day or two!

In my house we had take out (usually pizza) every Saturday. Every house is different but I can say that my house was lovely and had a really nice family feel to it

Could be especially helpful for the sports kit. @Kitsmummy - do you know how strict the blazer policy is as Y9 seems to be an ordinary one but Y10 is a barathea type but the same colour? Just trying to decide whether we buy one to last one or a larger one for two years! I'm feeling getting blazer at the start of term sale is cutting it a bit fine! Do people ever advertise their used uniform independently perhaps and if so where would I find details please? Thanks again!
