Derby high school

Can anyone tell me about this school? In comparison to other independent schools in the area. For primary aged boys and girls.

It’s cheaper than others but there is no competition within the city itself so alternatives would be a drive. The site is very small. Unless you have a very shy child or have been offered a really awful primary I’m not sure it’s worth the money. Personally I’d decide whether your priority is academics (Nottingham High, Loughborough) or a more traditional experience (Repton, Trent, Denstone) or just convenient and gentle (Derby High). I have experience as a parent of a couple of the schools and know plenty of families that have used the others.

I am also considering this school when the time comes.

It isn’t really accurate to say there’s no competition; there are a number of prep schools within Derby as well as Derby Grammar.

I have a positive impression. It seems caring and nurturing but with a good focus on academics.

A couple of dds friends went there and thrived. I also know a teacher there who is excellent. Have no idea how it might compare to other private schools though.

I wonder if we know the same teacher, @MermaidEyes !

Ooh maybe! Although just realised OP mentioned primary and the teacher I know is only secondary I believe.

The one I know is secondary too!

To be honest, if it was purely about academics I might be tempted to do the state primary and private secondary route but I don’t really want to do that. Plus, I do really like the thought of the smaller class sizes in reception in particular.

My only reservation is that while both DHS and DGS are now mixed sex, I don’t know if DHS will still have a majority of girls and DGS boys … I have a DS.

Derby Grammar is tiny, as is Old Vicarage. The reality is that Derby city doesn’t have great private schools (and I say that as someone who went to private school and whose children were privately educated all the way through, so not that I’m down on private education).

A good friend of mine teaches at Derby High and he is an amazing teacher. Secondary-only subject tho.

Agree with others there are not many private options in Derby tbh. Primary schools here are mostly good. What other options do you have Op?
