Inappropriate RSE in schools

Lucyam1 · 27/06/2022 18:43

Hi there I'm collecting evidence for a parliamentary debate on RSE in schools this week. Does anyone have any evidence of inappropriate materials being used that they'd like to share? The more evidence we have, the better chance we have of MPs pushing the Department for Education to take a stand and ensure that schools don't use explicit and/or unscientific materials. We've heard quite a few schools refuse to engage in dialogue with parents about this so would be good to hear any experiences from Mums on here. TIA

I don't mean to be goady OP but can you give some examples and context?

What would you consider to be inappropriate in RSE? And surely the whole subject is unscientific! But it's usually taught under the umbrella of 'this is what people who follow x religion believe'

I'm not quite sure what you're after?

I think RSE is relationships and sex education, not religious education.

TheFallenMadonna · 27/06/2022 18:46

Who are you collecting it for?

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 27/06/2022 18:50

What have you got so far?

SeasonFinale · 27/06/2022 18:53

I assume if it is such an issue you already have examples?

TeenPlusCat · 27/06/2022 18:56

Ask on the fwr board, I have see parents and teachers raising concerns there.

EvergreenForest · 27/06/2022 18:58

@12cats 😂 Thanks so much! I genuinely was confused by this post!! Makes fair more sense now!!

Lucyam1 · 27/06/2022 21:34

Yes Relationships and Sex Education - nothing to do with religion!

My DD was given a lesson on fetishism which included watching a video about puppy play (in Yr 10 I think). I was outraged at the time and wrote to the school. I had a reply attempting to justify the lesson which I thought was pathetic but I didn't follow it up further due to personal stuff going on.

Lucyam1 · 27/06/2022 21:42

Stuff from Just Like Us, Pop 'n' Olly, Bish, School of Sexuality, Jigsaw. Got a lot of stuff on gender ideology but specifically looking for any examples of things that are explicit and age inappropriate being taught to children under the age of consent.

I've been coordinating RSHE for many years and don't use any of those materials. Nor do my colleagues in surrounding schools. Age appropriate materials from or recommended by the PSHE association are widely used though, have you looked at those? RSHE is far better resourced than it used to be now that it is statutory and is scrutinised on a par with other subjects. Schools with crap PSHE are likely to be panned by Ofsted so maybe report there if you have real evidence of bad practice (rather than anecdotal stuff from a Mumsnet thread) in individual schools.

Who are you collecting it for?

This is a good question.

TheFallenMadonna · 27/06/2022 22:10

Who are you collecting the information for?

Are safe schools alliance, transgender trend and sex matters involved?

TeenPlusCat · 28/06/2022 06:47

Sorry the far board is the feminism: sex and gender board. There have been discussions there regarding teaching gender beliefs as facts and use of material provided that misrepresents the equality laws etc.

TeenPlusCat · 28/06/2022 06:48

Fwr board, not far board.

Lucyam1 · 28/06/2022 09:22

Yes all aware. It's for the MPs debating it this Thursday

But which group are you representing OP?

this may well be one of those areas where what you view as being inappropriate isn’t the same as someone else.

FWIW I am a ta in a school that uses Jigsaw and I like it a lot, seems a nicely balanced program.

Speak to Miriam Cates MP. She has plenty of evidence

Lily7050 · 03/07/2022 11:05

Do they start RSE in preschools now?

neerg · 03/07/2022 11:10

RSE has always been taught in schools. It may have a different name but yes, always been taught in nursery.
A lot is covered by the PSED side of the curriculum. It is nothing new.

Lily7050 · 03/07/2022 11:30

Did in the past the schools hide from parents what they were teaching to children?
That's what seems to be happening now. I have listened to Miriam Cates' speech on youtube and it is really disturbing.

Exactly this. And what is being taught is.... questionable to say the least.

This is worth a read:

I'm 34 and remember some of secondary PSHE lessons. I remember a lesson on respect on relationships in around year 7. I remember later on learning about safe sex, contraception, STIs, pregnancy, consent. All really sensible things for teenagers to be learning about. And was factual too.

That is not what is happening now- the safe schools alliance fact sheet shows what some providers are teaching and it's awful.
