Family Learning School Catford

I know it's a long shot but does anyone on here send their primary aged children to the Family Learning School in Catford? I've read the official stuff and Ofsted report and it sounds too good to be true so was hoping to find some first hand experience with the school here.

Hello @AuntMarysPinny My daughter goes there. It’s a fab school. Happy to chat privately further. Drop me a message.

My son goes to FLS. It’s wonderful. Really focuses on wellbeing, a love of learning and resilience . FLS has a brilliant motto of ‘fail, learn, get better’ so a true growth mindset philosophy as well as a “less is more’ principle following the incredibly successful Finnish education model. The kids benefit from loads of outdoor adventures including weekly forest school and adventure days. No testing , no pressure, learning through play and increased academic learning when the kids are ready. I would really recommend you attend an open day and meet the directors who are two very inspiring individuals.

My son goes there and loves it, as do we. He’s 8 and has been going since he was 5. We couldn’t believe we’d found somewhere that sounded so in line with our thoughts on education - living the dream 😁

We have 2 children at FLS and couldn't be happier with the school. They both love learning which is our main goal for them. On adventure day they do such a wonderful range of things, from horse riding to an immersive Mozart experience. And the weekly forest school day means they are such nature lovers! The low ratios mean they can really explore their own interests and can also be challenged at the right rate for them. The parent community is also wonderful which is a bonus. You are absolutely right that it is too good to be true! 😍

FLS is a very special school, run by very special and highly dedicated staff.

It’s a place where my daughter is very lucky to go and although I never thought I would pay for education, I couldn’t un-see what I saw when meeting the principal Julia Dunford, what an inspiring woman to lead a progressive and life changing independent school. Valuing above all, kindness, resilience, collaboration and nurturing our children to become the best humans they can be, and let’s face it the world really needs it right now.

Ofsted have not got the same vision unfortunately and although the children spend half their week in outdoors learning environments, whether that’s in the forest, enjoying the beautiful London parks or on the roof terrace of the school, they see ‘lack of outdoor space’ and although the children are nurtured individually, in a way that inspires a love of learning and sees each child for who they are and what they need, Ofsted sees ‘unstructured curriculum’ even the inspectors visiting the school admitted that Ofsted does not work for progressive schools like FLS, although it is a model that everyone would choose for their children if they could, society is always about ticking boxes and fitting a mould which doesn’t work.

The families of FLS see how special the school is and how our children have flourished (mine in just 2 years) it’s mind blowing and I can be almost certain she wouldn’t be as confident in who she is and her talents if we hadn’t taken this educational route.

If you are looking for a personal, inspiring school for your child look no further, The Family Learning School is the place <3

Sorry for not replying sooner, I got over excited about how wonderful the school sounded and then saw the catch - the fees 🤦‍♀️ it does sound like a truly nurturing environment for each individual child. I'm going to continue trying to earn more and win the lottery. I really value each of you sharing what it's like there as there isn't a huge amount of information available about the school and I think the Ofsted report is very unfair considering the hard work of everyone involved there. Hopefully future prospective parents will find this thread useful too!

I loved the school on their virtual open day but just got the email they they're closing the catford site and moving quite far away into Kent.

PPs with kids already enroled, are you all staying? It's such a different school but it's now too far from where we currently live to manage, we'd have to move. Sad

I know this is a very old thread but we are thinking of starting our son at FLS in Orpington next September and wondering if any of you moved over there and if you'd still recommend it?

Thank you!
