Telly appropriate (or not) for Toddlers

What tv programs do you think are good for toddlers (say age 18 - 36 months)? My nanny puts on Max and Ruby for my DD every morning. Maybe I'm just an extremist feminist (which I don't really think I am), but I HATE this program. Ruby cooks, has tea parties, like to do her friends hair/make-up, and looks after mischievous little Max who is always exibiting streotypical boy behaviour and always seems to get away with it in the end. A bit like grown ups that say "oh well, boys wil be boys..."

I think it's a horrible influence on DD. I only let her watch it because I figure she isn't old enough to catch onto these sexist lessons anyway. I would much rather she watch tweenies or Bob the Builder. Actually, Max and Ruby is the only show I don't like. Oh, and Dora the explorer, but that's just because she irritates me, and not because I think she's abad influence on DD.

Any thoughts? What other programs do you like / dislike?

I'm thinking about buying a bunch of DVDs and asking nanny to play them when Max and Ruby is on (which seems to be every bloody time I turn around).

Isn't the Tweenies just as bad though? Ballet loving Fizz, noisy Milo, Bella is a horrible bossy little cow and Jake is, well, Jake is pretty dull actually but clearly exhibits boyish behaviour.

so bad I had to say it twice...

smellymelly · 24/11/2004 10:40

I hate The Tweenies - the girls always seem to be so bitchy, and the bad behaviour never seems to be corrected. Needless to say it is banned in our house!!

smellymelly · 24/11/2004 10:42

Ooh posts crossed Soupdragon - glad I'm not the only one.

I love Dora the explorer .. think its an excellent idea to give exposure to other languages (I hate Tots TV though)

I dislike Max and Ruby but don't think there's any sexism there .. the genders are different and in the main they display different characteristics quite obviously as toddlers / pre-schoolers (of course their are extremes of behaviour on either side and many kids meet in the middle) .. I personally dislike the PCness of not being able to acknowledge that many many children display these boy and girl characteristics(yes I'm a feminist too)

I HATE I Spy and as frequent posters may know I believe its been proved beyond doubt that Barney the Dinosaur is evil

I love Maggie and the Ferocioius Beast

Hee hee - Twiglett! Just come on here, seen your message 'I love Dora the Explorer' and ds2 is downstairs watching it!! I think it's fab too and the boys love it!

nasa · 24/11/2004 10:48

Dora rules! in my (humble) opinion.

agree about tweenies and (twiglett) I can't STAND I spy - really irritating.

I don't really think max and ruby is that sexist, it's just to rabbits at the end of the day.

Gingerbear · 24/11/2004 10:48

Storymakers

is it me or is there a weird double post thing going on today - have seen a few this morning

Twiglett · 24/11/2004 10:49

oh how embarrassing

meant to say "of course there are extremes of behaviour" .. I do know the difference honestly I do

iota · 24/11/2004 10:49

Bob the builder makes me laugh - Wendy used to be stuck in the office doing paperwork and making tea - but now she's out there doing the building work and making a better job of it than Bob. Very PC.

But now who's in the office doing the paperwork? I think we should be told

Gobbledigook · 24/11/2004 10:49

On Nick Jnr, ds1 also likes Blues Clues.

I hate the Tweenies too = bleurgh!

Come outside on CBeebies is OK and Storymakers. They also like Big Cook, Little Cook (you should like this Uwila cos it's MEN cooking, not women!).

DillyDally · 24/11/2004 10:49

DD will be forced to sit in front of the new Hard Spell show and Mastermind until she exhibits signs of genius (and then she can watch fimbles)

Uwila · 24/11/2004 10:50

oh, yes Maggie is cool!

Iaccept that it okay for girls to act like girls and boys to act like boys (whatever that may mean), but I am very opposed to pushing them one way or the other at such a young age. If she wants to play with dolls, that's okay. But, if she chooses the Tonka Truck fire engine, then that's okay too.

Oh forgot about Balamory and Tikkabilla - yes, they are good and ds's love them. There are quite a lot of good ones on CBeebies I think.

Twiglett · 24/11/2004 10:50

think tech is probably dicking about with the server nasa

Gingerbear · 24/11/2004 10:53

I reckon Spud has taken over the paperwork in Bob's office.

nasa · 24/11/2004 10:53

blues clues is good actually - at first Kevin bugged me but I think he's great now

Gingerbear · 24/11/2004 10:53

I hate Teletubbies and Fimbles

Northerner · 24/11/2004 11:00

Ds's favourites are:

Dora
Max & Ruby
Busy Buses
Peppa Pig
Come outside

Balamory if he's in the mood

I have never even thought about Max and Ruby being sexist, IMO the stories are lovely and as he's only 2.9 I'm happy for him to watch it. There's plenty of time when he's older to start introducing him to the world of political correctness!
