What sort of questions do you want help with? eg Dividing in a given ratio, cancelling ratios, given a ratio having to find a missing number....If you can give an example that is troubling you it would help.

donbean · 14/01/2008 18:39

everything,
anything to do with ratios i need help with.

cosima · 14/01/2008 18:43

have you been on bbc bitesize or bbc skillswise

donbean · 14/01/2008 18:50

no, any good?
gonna try now.
thanks x

still dont get it.
get as far as:
2parts paint 1part water.
so 1+2=3
so 1/3
and 2/3

but what do i do then???

cosima · 16/01/2008 11:20

tell me the whole sum and what you are trying to do

cosima · 16/01/2008 11:25

so , for example if you have 90 litres of paint and water mix you divide the whole thing by 3 (cos you have got3 parts - 2 parts paint, 1 part water) so you get the answer 30. Then 2 parts are paint so 2 x 30 =60 litres, and 1 part water so 1 x 30 =30 litres.
is this the kind of thing you are after?

donbean · 16/01/2008 14:15

yes it is thanks.
its on alot of the test papers and i just cannot get it into my head.

cosima · 16/01/2008 14:47

basically 1. you had up all the parts in total. 2) you divide your quantity by the number of total parts so you will get the amount which each 1 part is worth. 3) then you look at the ratio. each different item is 1 part x by their ratio or share. if you give me a sum I can show you step by step

donbean · 16/01/2008 14:54

got it.
easier when written.

so:
100L of paint.
3parts water
1 part paint
so 3+1=4
100divided by 4=25
3x25=75
1x25=25
and to check it add the 2 nos together and should come to number given....100

Thanksxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

if you have a class of 20 children and the ratio of boys to girls is 1:1 then you will have 10 boys and 10 girls.

You add the parts of the ratio together.

1 +1 =2 (I know youknow, but it is easier to see what is happeneing if you have easy numbers

Yo utake the total number of kids in the class and divide it by the answer that you get.

so 20/2= 10

Yo multipy this by each part of the ratio

1x10=10
1x10=10

does that help at all?

Say now that you have 30 children in the class and the ratio of boys to girls is 1:2

1 + 2 =3

30/3 =10

1 x 10 =10 10 boys

2 x 10 =30 girls

cosima · 16/01/2008 15:12

well done
