Online science/computing courses for 11yo

EilyAndStephen · 08/02/2022 09:04

What kind of resources are out there for an 11yo who is very interested in science and computing and finding the school curriculum easy and boring?

He does his own reading, Googling and watches YouTube videos but I feel he needs some guidance. An online course that can be taken during school holidays would be perfect.

I know of outschool, which has tonnes of different topics and looks good. Is there anything else?

I’ve seen summer school courses run by universities but they tend to be 13+.

FireTech Camp - we've done a couple and they are v good, but expensive. www.firetechcamp.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=fire%20tech%20courses&utm_campaign=FT%7CSEARCH%7CUK%7CBRAND%7C&gclid=CjwKCAiA6Y2QBhAtEiwAGHybPeRsgE5BSp_bk87J7M_zMQlzvJFkGYxkOV0c4qdZJd1V57g_jjj_sBoC4LMQAvD_BwE

Great post as I'd love to find some more online options.

agree that FireTech are good

we've done some others like Cybercamp but they were rubbish - the kids just did some basic worksheets and then played on youTube / Google Earth for a few days

You might find something suitable through CoderDojo, which is run by volunteers, so free.

There is FunTech too. They are expensive, like Firetech. Both companies are staffed by computer science students/grads and targeted at wealthy families, but they do sometimes offer some free places.

I can recommend Fire Tech too! My 10 and 14 year olds have done several holiday courses with them and loved them. I have been looking at courses for Easter and it looks like they're running a discount on their website at the moment.

You could do CodaKid for Scratch depending on how much he already knows.

Google also offer online courses.

If he’s really advanced MIT opencourse

More expensive than some of the other options, but worth a look at:
