Is it polite for the child / parent to email to thank the school and say how much they enjoyed the day / like the school etc, or is that a bit much?

Depends how much you want the place! If it's your first or second choice then why not? It won't do any harm.

Thank you for this! It’s the first choice school, and we are hoping for a scholarship.

I would consider that weird. If it was y7 entry or higher I would be deeply suspicious of the quality of a school whose decisions would be influenced by such an action. The school certainly wouldn't expect it or be offended by the lack of such a message, it would be very unusual.

If it was for younger entry and the "exam" was arranged more like a "taster day" where the kid may not even know it was an "exam" then it would be appropriate to start any follow-up email (eg if you had a question arising from something that the child said afterwards) with something saying that sort of thing just as a preamble to asking your question, but there's no need to send anything if you don't have any questions.

At this stage unlikely to make any difference and may be off-putting.
