Anyone who has sent a child here, or got any info? Smile

Wondering about considering private options for our DS when the time comes. Is it worth the money?

I am considering here but one thing that concerns me is their sports facilities aren't in the grounds they have to drive there...

Also consider derby High up the road now takes boys all the way though. Derby grammar is also going co Ed from this September.

The only person I know personally who sent their DC there moved them after a year or so. Not sure why but I think they were not impressed with the VFM. That was a good few years ago tho.

Mate of mine works at Derby High and I know a few people who have sent their DC there. I would certainly check out first how many boys there would be tho. Just bc it takes boys all through doesn't mean there will be many - personally I would want at least a third of the year to be the same sex as my DC (especially if the year group is as small as it is at Derby High).

Where do you live OP? Are you near enough that DC will be able to walk - bc if not then you are committing to a commute of several years unless your DC can easily get to a relevant bus stop.

If you are near then Littleover CS is an excellent state secondary.

We live in Foston but I work in Littleover, just around the corner from derby high.

Secondary wise our feeder secondary is John Port for state. Just seems so big!

Yeps it is big, biggest school in the county. That's not a reason as such to look at private of course. There are lots of benefits to a big school. It had a poor Ofsted a few years ago but I am a bit out of touch with how it is now tbh.

The OFSTED was terrible, but we are really looking at private because of the opportunities. I’m sure it will have improved a lot, but I have been very impressed by what independent schools offer.

We don’t fit neatly into the catchment of any primary school in Foston and I would need to work part time to do drop offs and pick ups. Private school would mean I could revert to FT work.

The important thing is to look around and make a decision on this basis. If we only have DS we’ll certainly go down the private route but hoping to have another DC so that will obviously be more expensive!

Hi,

I know that of several boys have left Derby Grammar. It's hard for the boys if they are not an A student. Also I think the numerous times they have had issues to and from p.e (minibus breakdowns, flat tyre) has been an real problem.

Derby High though is flying, it's ivery in demand. I think they are full and more children applying than ever. It's a very good school.

Thanks, I think I am leaning a bit more towards Derby High. I agree it’s really not ideal at all Derby Grammar don’t have sporting facilities on site, I think sport will be a factor in our decision.

hi i am from derby grammar school and i have to say it was one of the best choices ever made for me, i used to be a slob and now they really try to push me to do my best. what i would recoment is trying a open day it can show you what you child can expect from this school and how he or she would learn. sadly the prices are high so not many can join but if you have the money you have the chance to see your future.
thanks
