BEBRAS

DD did the BEBRAS Junior competition earlier this month and has just logged in and found out that she got full marks - 200/200.

This is not a stealth boast - clearly she has done well, but I feel that I need to manage her expectations. She is beside herself with excitement and thinks that this means she is likely to be in the top 60 and will get invited to the finals in Oxford.

I'm probably a terrible parent for thinking this, but I just don't think she's that likely to be in the top 60 of the tens of thousands who sit this. She's a smart girl - particularly good at maths - but I can't help but think they must have made it easier this year and that thousands will have got full marks and they'll somehow pick a fraction of them, and I'll be mopping up the tears.

I've googled but can't find anything to indicate what sort of mark you need to get to the final or whether the marks were particularly high this year.

Can anyone cast any light?

Both my DC (yr 7 & 9) sat OUCC last week and said it was very very hard. Neither school prepped them for it but sent out a link to the OUCC website a couple of weeks beforehand saying they could practise there & then hosted the challenge one day after school.
Does anyone know when the results are out?

PenceyPrep · 16/02/2022 16:42

Yes, my DD worked through the practice stuff on the website @tagliatelevision and said there was no way she could have answered more than one or two questions if she hadn't. It was still super hard even though she had.

The provisional results are out. DD logged in earlier this week and found out her score, although apparently these won't be 'official' for a few more days - presumably while they deal with queries.

DD scored 40, but hasn't been told yet whether that gets a merit/distinction etc.

40 is a distinction according to this:
oucc.uk/index.php?action=content&id=21

PenceyPrep · 16/02/2022 17:10

Oh thanks @Sweetnhappy1 I hope that's true - she'd be absolutely thrilled!

However, I wonder if that just refers to last year's challenge...? Looking at the stats section, they changed the way they did the thresholds last year and I assumed that was just because it was lockdown and most people were doing it at home.

@PenceyPrep it's an excellent score either way

stuckasastuckthing · 16/02/2022 21:22

Do you know how to get login details - is it only from the school?

stuckasastuckthing · 16/02/2022 21:25

It does seem that it's tricky for the kids who don't have guidance from school or involved parents as the Bebras round seems not to require any prep but the oucc one definitely does.
PenceyPrep · 18/02/2022 16:07

@stuckasastuckthing DD has her login details from school.

The final scores have now been released, as have the thresholds for certificates - you were right @Tagliatelevision - same as last year, 25 for a merit, 40 for a distinction. Seems a bit frugal - means that only a small fraction of kids get one, which is a shame as they all did very well even to qualify.

PenceyPrep · 23/11/2022 13:38

How have they all got on with this year's Bebras?

DD is gutted - she got one wrong this year so 'only' scored 186 😂

Still a brilliant result!

DC doesn't have result yet - computing lesson tomorrow so hopefully will find out then. Did try to log in to check but couldn't see a result so thinks only the teachers can see it?

PenceyPrep · 24/11/2022 21:33

DD logged in at home to check hers. After you login you have to click 'user score' on the left hand side - it's not v obvious.

Thanks! Will let DC know

stuckasastuckthing · 25/11/2022 16:49

DC got 200 apparently - really thrilled!

PenceyPrep · 25/11/2022 19:44

Wow - well done Ministuckasastuckthing!! I hope school make a bit of a fuss of them.

Anyone know what the grade boundaries are this year? DS got best in school but others got distinctions and he didn't? Thx

PenceyPrep · 09/12/2022 17:53

DD reckons the cutoff for the next round for the Intermediate age group (Year 8 and 9) was around 128 @holidaytimeatlast . It may have been different for other age groups.

Thanks! He's 10-12. Doubt it's enough to get to next stage but I wondered how it worked with distinctions

PenceyPrep · 09/12/2022 18:50

Ahhh, that's the next age group down ('Junior' I think). I don't know what the qualifying score is for that group.

The certificates seem to be sthg like - top 10% of country get 'gold' and get through to next round. Then the top 25% of the school get a 'distinction' and the next 25% of the school get a 'merit'.

Thanks that explains it. So best in school kind of is a distinction too!

PenceyPrep · 09/12/2022 19:07

Yes, I think so. So, potentially, the same child could get a Best in School, a Gold and also a Distinction!

I believe it was 129 to get a gold award (ie qualify for OUCC) in the junior age group.

puffyisgood · 19/12/2022 14:37

My son got a good score in this, 190-something (thinks at least one person at the school got 200), but has never done any coding at all beyond what they teach in timetabled school classes, is it worth him trying to practice or anything?

settlingsusan · 14/11/2023 19:57

Sorry to post on a zombie thread - it's the most recent one and I thought the best to get parent's who may have done it this year (today) to see how they found it?
My friend's DD took it, got 179 in 10-12 last year but was upset after this one as she found it very different and only answered 3 in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Last year her teacher forgot to put them in for round 2 so it has been a long wait to see if she still "has it"

Pinkback · 14/11/2023 21:15

DD did 194 last year and she found this year question much harder.

PenceyPrep · 14/11/2023 22:03

Oh this is interesting @settlingsusan and @Pinkback . DD (200 in Juniors in 2021, 187 in Inters last year) just did inters again this year and said it was really tough. She didn't even get close to finishing - at least three questions short.

I thought perhaps she was losing her touch but maybe they just made it really hard this year!
