Hi,
My child's school have asked if they can refer my child to the school nurse but haven't told me the reason they want to make a referral? Does anyone know what a school nurse does? what support the school nurse can give and if the school nurse can make referrals to services and if so what services?

Thanks

Didn’t you ask them why they wanted to do this when they contacted you?

Ours can refer to mental health practitioners and the continence team. Most other things need to come through the GP or the senco.

Ask why. I would .

@HowMuchWine they asked me on Friday afternoon, I've emailed and asked why, not received a reply yet probably due to the weekend so thought I would ask on here so I had an understanding now . I did think they could refer to mental health team but I've asked for my child to be seen my MH team already so confused as to why else x

In my LEA, the referral for a Mental health practitioner has to come via the school nurse, so even if you’ve asked for that before, maybe this is the route needed.

@Howshouldibehave my GP Dr referred my child to CAHMs but they didn't see her. Said the problems weren't severe enough for them to see my child x

The school nursing team can access mental health support practitioners employed by the NHS-they have been set up recently to support C/YP who don’t meet the criteria for camhs but still need support.

The school nurse can provide some mental health support for those that don't meet criteria for CAMHS. They can also refer into voluntary/emotional well-being services if they run in your area.
If they feel the mental health need can't be managed by them or tier 2 mental health services then a referral from them to CAMHS would add more weight to it as they will be able to show that they have tried some support without improvement.

They do actually have to tell you why. They can’t just refer.
