Hello everyone,

I'm starting a new career as a teaching assistant and I was wondering if anyone could help me.

What is the dress code for a male teaching assistant ?

Thanks in advance.

At my school they mostly wear black jeans and a t shirt. Different schools will have different dress codes though. Our stipulations are no blue jeans and no hoodies.

In my primary the dress code is the same for everyone - smart casual. Some men wear smart trousers with a shirt/polo, some wear chinos and t shirts. No bramded/sports trainers except on PE days but most wear casual shoes. Chino style shorts are worn In hot weather. No denim allowed.

Ask your Head. At my primary school it was smart causal. No jeans, trainers, sportswear of any kind. All the male teachers wore chinos, shoes and a shirt; the TAs wore similar. Better to be over than under dressed on your first day and then you can look at what everyone is wearing. But definitely ask. Good luck.

Primary or secondary ?

Have you looked round the school ? What was everyone else wearing ?

If in doubt, always err on the side of being smarter than you need, rather than too casual. Unless it is a teacher training day, I would go in a shirt and tie in the absence of other instructions.

My son has just started working as a TA in a primary school. He wears suit trousers (no jacket), shirt and tie, and smart shoes. The other two male TAs wear similar.

I imagine it depends on the school though.

Totally depends on the school but I would say you cannot go wrong with chinos and a plain light jumper (maybe a white t shirt or shirt underneath). Perhaps have a pair of trainers handy for sports etc (I always bring in a pair and leave them at work)

Wishing you all the very best in your new job.

I do think it would be a good idea to check if a tie is required. If not this type of jumper is what I would regard as appropriate

It does depend on the school, they should have a dress code of some sort.

Smart trousers and a shirt for the first day at least so you can get a feel. There is only one male TA in the school I volunteer in but plenty of male teachers (primary) none of them wear jeans. Mainly chino style or suit trousers, shirt or polo shirt.

A word of warning if you are providing behavioural support, don’t wear a tie!

SequinsandStiIettos · 20/09/2021 05:56

Hurray for male TAs. My son needs as many role models as he can get. Primary would be smart shirt/trousers. Secondary ours wears tie also. SEN school might be more flexible in terms of what is practical. Good luck Shamrock

At our independent you would be expected to dress on par with students and teachers, meaning suit and tie.

huuskymam · 20/09/2021 11:26

Most of the male teachers in our school wear jeans and t shirts or jumper, the ones doing pé on the day would wear a tracksuit.

Male teachers and tas in my school are required to wear smart trousers and a shirt. Chinos, jeans, trainers not allowed. Tie optional.
