Preparing for primary school

My eldest child is starting school next September. What are the best things for me to work on with him over the next year for him to be school ready?
He goes to nursery 3 days per week so he's used to being away from us for 8-4.
I'm trying to work on independence right now with things like shoes.
He will be a little under 4.5 when he starts school, but he's quite a reserved child and it's taken him a while to be comfortable with the move to the pre school room at his nursery.

This is a step in the right direction. Focus on social and life skills right now.

Sharing with others, toiletting independently, eating independently with cutlery, getting shoes on and off, getting a coat on and off, getting changed for PE, recognising own name, holding pencil properly. Some basic numbers and phonic knowledge.
