I have had to produce my old cse and o level exam certs , its been very stressful but they have now been found by a exam board . The maths has come back as a CSE taken and it was a grade 3 - looking this up it was considered a pass in CSE , but as gcse didnt exist then i am worried that this wont count . Any suggestions to get around this would be helpful

CSEs were grades 1-3 1 was a C equivalent, 2 was a D 3 was an E

Fours6 · 06/05/2021 15:32

yes I saw this but why are CSE compared to o level ? do they not have a grade themselves?

Yes, as maddy68 says a Grade 3 CSE was the equivalent of an E at O' Level.

Finfintytint · 06/05/2021 15:34

It would be considered a fail for an O’ Level but I wouldn’t worry too much. If it’s for a job application, try and evidence your maths capability in other ways, from experience, for example.

thank you , I am sure it will be fine as have diploma and degree after this but being asked for gcse ? . It is quite a worry x

Usually the wording is something along the lines of “GCSE grade C or equivalent”. The equivalent grade of CSE is a 1, so your grade wouldn't be high enough.

Your other qualifications might count as “equivalent” if they are in Maths or have a high Maths content e.g. statistics. You may need to ask.

Fours6 · 06/05/2021 18:05

I see thank you .I am sure it will be fine, I was sure we were told at school that ot was a pass . I would of definitely done it again had I have known otherwise .
Seems pointless doing them

I too am of the O level/ CSE era.
I too have degrees but a very low CSE maths score....
Only grade1 equivalent to O level grade C in my day.
Major avoidance of maths for years but finally [in middle age] did functional skills level 2 which acts as an equivalent to GCSE for many jobs.
Hope all works out for you.

Fours6 · 06/05/2021 19:45

Thank you, I have had a quick look at functional skills for maths just in case ,did it take you long to complete this ?

I did it through a local college once a week for about 6 months. However, think you can do on line as well at your own pace.
It was useful for me as job insisted on maths...

Fours6 · 06/05/2021 20:50

Oh ok well that's not to bad ,I might be able to do it online as an option as well .
Thank you all .its all been very helpful x

Good luck!

maddy68 · 07/05/2021 14:55

A grade E is a pass at GCSE. It's only a U which is a fail.

je4852 · 07/05/2021 15:00

Look at the Maths Made Easy website. Offers on line exams at several levels and a GCSE equivalency exam.

Fours6 · 07/05/2021 15:30

Will look at this, just found out out that I will have to do a exam for maths after all

Yes op a grade 3 CSE is lower than a C at O level or old GCSE.

yes it is a pass, in the same way an E at GCSE or now a 2 at GCSE is a pass, it is a grade, not unclassified (U) but it is likely that a job asking for grades will be looking for grade C GCSE/grade 4 GCSE (taken since 2017) or grade C GCE O-level or grade 1 CSE.

Good luck with the course, I imagine you will be more motivated to succeed than 16yo you!

DinkyDaisy · 08/05/2021 07:32

Functional Skills level 2 can be free of charge at local colleges/ Family Learning courses, if you do not have a grade C O level/ GCSE equivalent.
I did not have to pay for my course or exam doing it this route.
Anything below a grade 1 CSE would put you in this category I think.

Hi Fours6, did you manage to do the exam online? I'm in the same boat and need a qualification for this September. Left it a bit late and now fretting. Hope studies/exam going ok for you.
