Private schools in Yorkshire (Harrogate/Wetherby)

We are considering a move up to Yorkshire from London and have started looking at areas. Schools are important to us, so might be guided a bit by where the good private schools are - we need from nursery upwards. Not sure of the reputation of any, so would be helpful to hear!

On an utterly flippant note, Ampleforth College will be thrilled to meet a single person who hasn't heard of their reputation. Somehow they managed to fail yet another inspection recently!

I'd look at Ashville College. It's a lovely HMC school with some boarding but mostly day. Down to earth. Good all round education.

There is Bootham, St Peters and Cundall, in/around York if you want to go further east.

Strong academic schools, GSAL , QEGS/Wakefield Girls, Bradford Grammar. All also great pastorally and super sports/ arts offering
Small schools ( mixed academic profile) Gateways , Silcoates, St Marys very rare to hear of unhappy kids but small size can affect eg sports opportunities
Wildly mixed St Peters ( hard to get in at 11+, 13+ but no selection at 4+ and can stay regardless)
Very ordinary Ashville
Don’t waste your money Woodhouse Grove, Queen Ethelburgers, Read, Ampleforth ( as mentioned up thread)

Gateways is lovely. Smaller with class sizes of 15 or so. Recently gone co-ed.

Harrogate has some really excellent high schools which could save you a pretty penny. Harrogate Grammar (not a grammar), St Aidan's (CofE) and St John Fisher (Catholic).

Dc has made friends with a few Dc from Ghyll Royd school through an out of school activity, and all the parents and children seem to love it.

They all discuss where they are planning on moving at 11, and the most popular by far seem to be Giggleswick, Grammar School at Leeds and Harrogate Ladies College.

Actually, agree with PP that you should also check out the Harrogate State schools.

Secondary only:

Within Harrogate, if your kids are academic enough to get into the top sets at HGS then, given the price difference, it'd IMO be a much, much better bet than the [smallish, not very distinguished] local private schools.

Leeds & Bradford GS [both private] are pretty good. Queen Ethelburgas gets very good results these days.
