Getting a school place before we move

Is this possible without having the local house sorted yet?
We're moving to a different county in the summer holidays, with DD going into y10 in September.
There are currently spaces at our preferred secondary according to the council website. They say you can apply for a place up to 30 school days before you want the child to start.
Would it be pointless applying with our miles and miles away address??
It would make a lot of sense to get her school place sorted asap so that her gcse options are all set for her to start in September.

Or will they turn down our application with our current address because it's so far away?

My understanding is you need to be resident in the house to get a place for normal allocation time, but I am less certain with admissions other than Reception and Yr7.
There are 3 or 4 experts on MN though - just not sure how to call them to this thread.

Alternatively, I'd phone the school and explain the situation - they will have an idea as to whether they commonly have 'several spaces' in the right year group, or if they don't, which will give you some reassurance even if they do say you have to wait.

If there are spaces, they have to be given out if someone applies; so yes, if there was actually a place when you asked for one, you have to be given it, your address doesn't matter in these circumstances.

The issue normally is that you would need to take it up fairly soon after being offered; you would just need to make sure (in writing preferably!) that they are happy for her not to start until September.

We moved to a different area, and contacted the schools directly and seeked their advice.

If a school has places available you can apply from anywhere and they will give you the place but I think you have to take it up within a few weeks of it being offered. Speak to the school but they may be happy to accept an application at eg start of July for her to start in September.

We visited in the July and accepted a place to start in the September.

Thanks all.

They specify on the admissions website that you can apply up to 30 school days before you want them to start, so that would be mid June.

Have emailed the school - fingers crossed!
