My daughter wants to sit the 11+ test for local grammar school. She will be entitled to the extra time given to people with an assessment of dyslexia. She also has processing issues which means having a reader in exams is beneficial. She can read but misses the finer details of some sentences which can completely change what’s being asked in maths questions for example. I’m going to practice with her so she understands that the reader just reads out and doesn’t help understand the question or answering it and so she doesn’t get distracted by wanting other interactions with her reader. She likes seeing how many questions she can do within a certain time so I think that side of things will be fine. However, I just have an anxious feeling that having a reader will make the school not want her! I know that isn’t rational as it should be done purely on scoring but it is an exam just for school set and administrated just by that school. Can anyone offer me some reassurance. Other than these processing issues she is academic and does well in maths with a great memory for facts in other subjects so I’m not worried about her going to the grammar school and keeping up. I am worried about not getting in knocking her confidence especially as her sibling is already there but don’t think that’s a good enough reason to stop her doing the test and getting the possible opportunity to go there which she wants to do.
