Deregistering

Does anyone know if I can deregister my daughter and start her in the year below?
I think I made a big mistake and put my summer baby in school. My daughter will turn 5 in June and I stupidly listened to everyone. I started her in school last sept, instead of this Sept. I think she is really struggling and tad behind everyone else. I think she would benefit from starting again.

I think having enrolled her it will not be that straightforward, not least because school admissions deadline for September has passed and spaces are limited in Infants. Have you spoken to current school yet?

You can only do this at the current school with permission from the head teacher, but as was said above might be difficult if all spaces are likely to be allocated for September 2021. You could speak to your local authority to see whether they would agree a reception start at compulsory school age or offer further advice. I wouldn’t deregister until you know the options available.

Have a look on Facebook for the flexible school admissions for summer borns group. Lots of excellent advice and knowledgeable people to answer specific questions.

You can ask the current school about keeping your daughter down a year and repeating Reception, but the answer may well be no due to infant class size regulations.

Alternatively, you can ask your council if your daughter can enter Reception again in September. Again, the answer may well be no. However, if they say yes you will have to apply for a Reception place - you won't have any right to keep your daughter at her current school. As we are now well past the deadline for applications, it is unlikely you would get one of your preferred schools. You would, instead, get a place at the nearest school with places available. This is likely to be an unpopular school and could be some way from home.
