That's it really. Have aquired a piano and dd loves tinkling the ivories. Neither I nor dh are musical (although his sis and dad had musical background)

What do we do as regards lessons? She's nearly 4.
Also if she's too young for elssons do we let ehr just tinkle or do we number the keys or something like that- dh asking

My Ds started when nearly 5, he's been having lessons for a year now and can play 5 notes on each hand and read the music. He has a twenty minute lesson at home. We are sporty rather than musical as a family and I'm really pleased that he's enjoying his music alongside football etc

I would say between 5 and 6, depending on concentration level of the child. That is when all my family started, though we were all tinkering on the piano well before that.

yes and do let her just play on the keys at the moment. I wouldn't number them because that may hinder sight reading later on. You could, i suppose, teach her middle C and the octave up from there. And a few simple tunes like twinkle twinkle in C major. That is what i am doing for my 3 year old now, but he is not taking it all in yet, just enjoys the effect.

DS2 started when he was almost 7: his teacher normally won't take them until they were 7. He had tinkered a bit at home (I play), but made amazing progress especially in the first year.

IMO formal piano lessons are a bit much at 4 or 5, and with the exhaustion of school it's not reasonable to expect them to be able to concentrate on regular practice.

thanks all. I can't rememebr what age I was when i started but I didn't carry on to do any exams or anything. I ddi wonder about the numbering of the keys and reading the music later on so shall stop dh from doing that.
