Do reception classes have toys or just learning games ?

My DS is back to reception in England tomorrow and he said he's sad he won't be able to play cars. I thought considering cars are such staple, that they would have some to play with. Is this a Covid thing that they don't or just that they don't have toys like in preschool?

Everyone told me reception was play based with a few chunks of learning thrown in. DS says the 'toys' are learning games (things like counting pom poms picking them up with tweezers) and scavenger hunts for numbers / letters / shapes, which sounds great too. But Ds is big time into make believe and does little adventures with his toys, he's quite quiet in comparison to the few other boys I know his age. I'm sure he will change being at school now too.

Every school I’ve ever taught in has had plenty of cars in EYFS!

Tonnes of cars, dolls, Lego, Duplo etc in reception last year. The cars had tape/painted tracks in various shapes including numbers and ramps for "science" - which go furthest!

Lots of cars and other small world stuff in my daughters class. I think she spends half the day pretending to be a cat.

DS2 is currently in Reception and appears to spend all day playing Daddies, Mummies and Hairdressers with the girls. They definitely have props. DS1 is a very different character and spent much of Reception bewailing the fact that they had Duplo not proper Lego...

Maybe he's sad he won't be able to play with the card he has at home?

Yes maybe then he just can't articulate what he means and that it's really he'll miss home and his own toys. We had a great half term, but ironically he'd only just started going in ok and then it was the break. Hope he settles back into the routine quickly.

@Whatthebloodyell @DelurkingAJ well actually DS does come home and say he was the mummy cat today ! Can I be his kitten ? So maybe this is universal 😂

Lot of toys in ours as far as I tell. I was quite relieved when I saw pictures as I was worried they’d have to strip everything out and it would be cold and sterile. I imagine they’ve taken some things out but it still looks fun to me.

@Ratatcat yeah I am bit concerned Covid has stripped out the toys, glad to hear it's not the case at your school 😀 Our school does seem to be short on funds for things as all our despite being a new school with swanky buildings.
