Can I ask you all for some help?

Can I ask you all to look at the following and use 3 biological words to describe them?

First

Second

Third

Fourth

Fifth

There are no right or wrong answers, please could you give me the first three things of a biological nature that come to mind. If 3 words don't come to mind, let me know that too!

Then, if you don't mind, could you let me know how old you were when you stoped studying biology? (feel free to tell me to mind my own buisness on that one if you like!}

Ta muchly!

Will explain why when I've got some results.

2. goldfish, fish, animals 3. cells, water 4. plant, bush, fauna 5. microorganisms, cells

Think I only studied biology in the equivalent of 9th year then in year 10&11 did an integrated science for GCSE's (20 years ago btw) only biology thing I remember studying in that was genetics!

2. Fish, fins, gills 3. Unicellular, vacuolated, pseudopods 4. Fern, evergreen, tendrils 5. Bacilli, rods, cholera

I stopped studying biology aged 29, when I finished a PhD in a biological science.

ebenezer · 07/10/2007 13:27

amoeba, cell, nucleus

fern, leaf, photosynthesis

bacteria, organism, ....ummm dunno

I did biology o level and got a grade c. Can you tell?!
Am intrigued by this thread and await further info!!!

pageturner · 07/10/2007 13:29
  1. mushroom, fungus, toadstool
2. goldfish, fins scales 3. cells, amoeba, ? 4. fern, spine, moss 5. veins, leaves, seaweed

Hope that's OK, tried not to look at previous answers!

I stopped studying biology after CSE at 16.

Teddimac · 07/10/2007 13:30

1 - mushrooms, funghi, toadstools
2 - goldfish, ?, ?
3 - amoeba, bacteria, cell
4 - plant, leaves, bush
5 - molecules, bacteria, ?

Studied biology to O level (so about 15/16). But that was a loooong time ago!

Intrigued.

Gobbledispook · 07/10/2007 13:30
  1. fungi, mushrooms, toadstools
  2. Goldfish, aquatic,
  3. Cell, amoeba, nucleus
  4. Chlorophyll, photosynthesis, plant
  5. Bacteria?

Finished normal biology (including plants and animals) aged 16
Human biology/physiology/pharmacology up to age 23

I bet I did utter crap! My memory is shocking and I'm only dealing with pharmaceuticals now really!

RustyBear · 07/10/2007 13:32

1 Fungi, mycelium, lichen?

2 fish, carp,

3 amoeba, unicellular, reproduction by division

4 moss, spores, bryo-something?

5 micro-organisms, bacteria (but I got that from the url, otherwise I'm drawing a blank)

I did O level biology, but I've forgotten most of it...

melpomene · 07/10/2007 13:33
  1. mushrooms, funghi, spores
2. fish, fins, gills 3. amoeba (?), cell, nucleus 4.needles, prickles, coniferous 5.blood cells? bacteria? sausages?

studied biology to O Level (16)

WriggleJiggle · 07/10/2007 13:33
  1. living things
  2. micro organisms
  3. animals/plants

Was 16 (end of GCSE)

Twiglett · 07/10/2007 13:36

O'Level .. so 16

WriggleJiggle · 07/10/2007 13:38

Oh ooops, now glanced at thread and realised what I was supposed to do. Will try again ...

  1. funghi, plant, spores
  2. goldfish, living creature,
  3. cells,
  4. plant, photosynthesis
  5. virus, bacteria, microscopic

And to link them all - MrsMcGrue or some funny sounding name.

Did 3 GCSE Sciences. Now forgotten most of it!

Blandmum · 07/10/2007 13:59

Bump, anybody else???

OP posts:
Tamum · 07/10/2007 14:03

Wriggle, I put "fair" as one of my 3 words on goldfish until I realised it had to be biological, and even then I didn't do very well

Blandmum · 07/10/2007 14:05

I repeast there are no right or wrong answers, I am simply 'probing'!

OP posts:
PandaG · 07/10/2007 14:22

I have GCSE Biology, done no science since.

will now read the thread!

ok- not looked at any of the answers given so far : first words that come to mind are -

  1. Fungi, Mushrooms, toadstools
  2. Goldfish, fish, aquarium
  3. cell, ameoba, nucleus
  4. lichen, moss, forest
  5. bacteria, rods, cells

DH says

  1. mushroom, fungi, spores
  2. fish, scles, gills
  3. cell, mitochondria, golgi bodies
  4. moss, bogs, peat
  5. bacteria, E coli, cell division
Whizzz · 07/10/2007 14:25

oops - I did one year of A level Biology (long story !)
DH - did equivalent to A level at scottish uni

Blandmum · 07/10/2007 14:48

OK, I'll fess up now. I'm teaching classification of living things next week, to my A level class, and also to the year 7s!

I'm always struck that there is a natural tendency for people to classifly living things, and that our classifications are often quite accurate

The five pictures come from examples of the 5 Kingdoms of living things.

Ever person who answered did some degree of classification which was correct.

The lest well catagoried was not surprizing, the amoeba which is grom an odd group call ed the protoctista!

The second least well catagoried was the fish! Which confirmed my suspicion that we have a tendencey to equate animal= fury animal!

Thank you for taking part in a highly uncientific poll!

the 5 kinddoms are Animals, Plants, Fungi, prototists, and bacteria

Gosh you must be a good biology teacher. MY biology teacher refused to discuss evolution (referring us to Genesis) and when we got to sexual reproduction confined her speculations (she was very much a virgin) to mosses, liverworts and fungi...

SenoraPostrophe · 07/10/2007 15:16
  1. fungi, spore, mushroom
2. fish, goldfish, koi (so says dh anyway) 3. bacterium, probably, can't remember 4. tree, evergreen, conifer 5. don't know.

I did a/s biology (evening class age 17) , but was overdoing work and stuff at the time so didn't give it my full attention.

SenoraPostrophe · 07/10/2007 15:17

too late!

colditz · 07/10/2007 16:08
  1. Fungi, Toadstools, organisms 2)Goldfish, vertebrates, animals 3)Cell (?) 4)moss, plant, living organism 5)cells, germs, bacteria

Stopped at 16, took Science GCSE double award.
