Is it better to do homework & additional reading every day after school or weekends only?

The children in question are 5, 7 and 10.

We never did homework at the weekends. Homework was/is done in the evening after school

What is better is whatever works for your children and the family

  • the 5 year old maybe too tired after school so weekends maybe better
  • 10y probably needs to start becoming organised and managing time efficiently and so ideally would clear their homework each evening

If it’s additional work on top of homework then I would have thought an hour on a weekend morning and then fun/rest for the remainder but again depends on the amount of extracurricular activities they each have over the weekend.

Short version - only you can answer what is better for your family

Agree with noworklifebalance.

We're all early risers, so it suits us to do 'extra' stuff before school. My DD (aged 9) has time to do piano practice, reading and something from a workbook before school every weekday. After school she'll do a few minutes of something online (Times Tables Rock Stars, IXL), plus any homework (she doesn't get much). This leaves plenty of time for relaxing, play dates (pre Covid) and extra-curricular activities. At the weekend we just do reading whenever it fits in, plus any homework if it's a project.

Our friends don't do anything before school, but find that the slot after dinner works well for them - even beyond 8pm for their Y6 child.
