Sutton High, Caterham or Freemans?

Hi

I would really appreciate some feedback from those who have had recent experience of any of these 3 schools.

We currently have a daughter at Seaton House, which is a great school, albeit slightly lacking on the facilities front. Our daughter is just commencing year 1 and we have decided to move her now because we would like her to continue her education in an independent school until 18 and because her sister will be starting nursery next year and we want for them to be settled in the same school.

The most recent threads are at least a year old if not more on any of the schools and would really appreciate more current views/experiences.

Distance-wise Sutton high and Freemans are reasonable and Caterham would be half an hour away.

Thanks

Hi, we have a similar choice, although I think it will be between CLFS and Caterham as I strongly prefer co-ed, at least for the junior school. DD will be starting local infant school (reception) in September and I am thinking of moving her to one of these schools later in a couple of year.

You know though that Freemen’s is from Year 3, do you?

I am undecided at the moment whether I want an all-through school straight away (so Caterham or Freemen’s, both excellent but a good 30mins drive, and what if DD changes over years and the school chases at 5 won’t be the best at 11?) or a good prep (Aberdour or Banstead Prep - again both good schools and only 12-13mins drive, but then the dreadful 11+ ahead...)

Thanks @Karmi2010 we are having the same discussions in our house!

Co-ed v single sex no strong preference either way just want to make the right choice for now as like you say, there is no knowing if the same school will be right later down the road but it is at least reassuring that it is an option to stay until 18.

Do you know anything about Sutton High as seemed to get mixed opinions from the few sources that I have and really confused?!

I hear that Freemans is very academic and Caterham less so? Do you know if this is true?

Really would like to avoid the stress of the 11+ if possible but lets see!

@Capriscorp1Capriscorp1
hi, I sent you a private message

We are also looking at these schools. There is not much on here about any of them. What were your sources’ views on Sutton High?

Epwell · 13/07/2020 19:56

AVOID Freemen's. It is absolutely bloody awful. A hard, uncaring, uninspiring place, bullying is rife. Caterham, on the other hand, is lovely. Much better quality teaching, fabulous pastoral care, great extra curricular activities, fantastic career guidance. The sport at Caterham is streets ahead of Freemen's at every level. As is the drama. Musically they are about the same. Academically I think Caterham is much stronger, the teaching is at a completely different level. I have experience of both schools.

@Capriscorp1 @Corblimbea

Sent you both a PM

As an existing parent, I would not recommend Freemen's.

Motherofkitteys · 04/03/2021 09:34

Yes, avoid Freemen’s at all costs. Plenty of other choices, not sure about Sutton High but out of your choices would suggest Caterham as the best option, don’t know where you are based but am sure there must be other options? Downsend go up to GCSE now and is a good choice, however, There are some very good state schools in our area which are worth looking at also. Good luck with your decision!

I know this is an old thread but wondering what your choices were and if you’re happy with them? Any feedback you could share? Going down the same route with DD so would appreciate any wisdom!

karmi2010 · 20/01/2022 10:17

Hi, we decided in favour of our oustanding state school for DD for primary school and will not enter the 7+ race. I think I will reconsider in Year 4 (for Year 5 entry) - I know Caterham and Sutton High have some spaces for Year 5, and Freements occasionaly have as well. And for 11+ we will apply to all 3, plus Wimbledon High, our local gramma schools and possibly some other independents, and will see where DD gets to.

In Y4 and Y2, it will be much easier to tell what school will suit your daughters. Also, different people have different priorities. I would want Latin, strong Textiles with proper sewing, and less emphasis on music and athletics. I did eight years of Latin, enjoy textile work in many forms, and am clumsy and tone deaf. Talents tend to run in families.

Thank you. @Capriscorp1 may I also ask what your choice was?
