I have previously recommended this online school which my son has been attending for the last 4 years. He has ASD and despite having a f/t EHCP, brick school wasn't working for him - often because of really simple things like access to ICT or making sure he recorded his homework. However, CHS is now ramping up fees because of the 'huge demand' caused by the pandemic, despite not offering anything additional. From £5k (£4K for existing pupils) to £9k P.A. Worse than this, the school is now claiming that it's offer made by email to keep fees the same for all existing families, because they wanted to keep as many loyal parents as possible, does not apply to DC who have SN (despite being funded privately by parents whose EHCP states EHE) as it deems these D.C. to be funded by the LA as parents may receive a personal budget to offset the cost of privately contracted educational services. According to the principal, existing pupils receive a discretionary fund from the school to recognise financial hardship of parents but we, by contrast, have to pay the increased rate (£9k) plus an extra £2k for A level maths because we can request the LA pay the extra and essentially they want to maximise profit rather than deliver 'public' education. And this is allegedly a bargain because some schools are charging the LA £20 for a single A level! Originally we were told that my son could continue to access the iGSCE course plus an A level course in maths as he already had an iGCSE in maths for £5k provided that we paid in 7 days, in full, for the academic year 2020-21. This was an increase from £4K charged for the 2019-20 academic year. However, the principal has since withdrawn that offer and now said that they will not accept payment of fees from parents (even in total, in advance - I even tried to pay the fees privately but the school would not accept the transfer and returned the money) but stated that we must obtain a letter within 7 days from the LA agreeing to pay the increased fees. This is not possible (I suspect that the principal is well aware of the speed at which an LA works even in normal times) and so my son will lose his place. I can't even pay the fees in advance to guarantee his place. Nothing will guarantee his place other than something that is impossible to deliver, especially within the artificially constructed timeframe, because it is out of my control. This is naked profiteering and disability discrimination. Please share widely. I am sure that any brick school that sought to profit in this way from a health crisis would be rightly slated for unethical behaviour. I want to raise my son with integrity. The ethos of this school is disgraceful and it has shown it can never be the right placement even if that leaves him without a school place, in the midst of a pandemic. Individual teachers are fantastic but the management stinks and I withdraw all previous supportive comments and advise that you do not send your child to this online 'school'.
