Common Lit help needed

peoplepleaser1 · 02/06/2020 09:47

My son is in Y8 and is being set work on common lit for English. Unfortunately none of the work is being marked and we've had no feedback.

Ive asked for help, feedback and marking but to no avail. know that is not ideal, but I don't want to derail this thread by going over that here!

Does anyone know if the there are any places where I can find parent notes, teacher notes, answers or support for common lit please.

It's so hard as I'm trying to support him but I myself am insecure of some of the answers and it's turning into a guessing game with no answers at the end of it.

Thank you.

Where are you OP? I had to google Common Lit and all the entries were from the U.S. I'm not aware of it as something used in the U.K. I could be completely wrong - but that might be why you've had no response to your query here.

Agree - what is common lit?

Thank you for your replies. I'm based in the UK, but I think you are right that it's a resource from America that is available worldwide.

OP - presumably you've already seen everything on the Common Lit website, particularly this page which offers guidance to parents?

Interesting site, but it does seem quite a lot of ... faff for parents - and looks like callous off-loading by teachers who use this.

peoplepleaser1 · 03/06/2020 09:23

@PerditaProvokesEnmity thank you yes I've tried to use the support but apparently I need to link via my child's school and the teacher hasn't been able to facilitate that.

Yes I agree it's not ideal in terms of teaching material. In general I'm very disappointed by my DC's home learning provision but I'm trying to do my best with it.

It would be so helpful to have access to the question answers so that I could support my son more effectively.

How absolutely ridiculous! Is the whole school using this site or just your child's class? D'you think their teacher has even looked at the site to understand what is required of parents and school? It's very unsatisfactory. And such a random resource to pick when there must be hundreds tailored to the UK curriculum and more accessible for parents.

However, it's a useful resource for cross referencing pieces of literature that might have some theme in common. I'd stop worrying about finding the 'right' answers and just concentrate on reading, comprehension and interpretation using their lists as a guide.
