Reading tips for 'key words' please (infants)

Does anyone have any good ideas or games to get children to learn their keywords please?

We didn't really get too far bashing away at them in reception, now another list has come home for year1.

I'd really like some fun ways for dt's to learn them please.

Thanks

What about making up some really silly sensences with the key words in them. They don't need to know all the words or write them, you could do that and highlight the key word. Get them to make up the sentence, the sillier the better. Then as you read them together, they can spot the keyword.

Keep it short.

Stick a few around the room, give dt a copy of one of those up, read words together, get them to race to find the matching word, then see if they can beat mummy writing it down, then think of a sentence with that word in it, say it to each other. Then do something else!

All you need is matching set of key words and some paper and pencils.

Sod... the key words. Learn the phonics and most of the keywords will easily be decodable. There are only a few tricky words that just have to be learnt.

Get the jolly phonics manual, its great.

find a list then cut and paste into word let them help you change font or colour and let them cut them out ..mine are happy with scissors for ages

let them decorate a couple of envelopes each with their name stickers or printer thingys ....spread on floor and see if they can recognise any ..these can go in a pile and then into one envelope and the rest they cant do will go in another envelope

maybe work on these for a bit and then leave for a couple of days then see if they can get any of these harder ones right and transfer into envelope one

maybe put envelope one in pride of place on mantelpiece or sthing

the problem comes when one dt can do half an envelope through and the other cant do any!!

Thank you all! These are great ideas. Much more interesting than just trawling though trying to learn them.
