Science award scheme Year 8 and onwards

Does anyone know anything about this scheme? DS(12 yr7)is very good at science and it is his favorite subject.
His new form teacher told us last night that if he continues to show enthusiasm and perform well, he will be entered for this scheme in Year 8. Apparently they do a research project (approx 10 hours of research) and there are Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. Assume thay start with the Bronze.
The school is science status and has connections with Glaxosmithkline, so don't know if has anything to do with them.

Crest awards.

They are open at all school, with the different levels for different ages.

The kids do project work, the staff assess it and send it off for accreditation.
