My 6 year old is currently in year 2 and still cannot read or write. We have seen our doctor who just refers us back to school and the school just keep saying she’s on a list to be assessed and promised us this would be sorted by half term last year but still nothing. We got a private tutor in and she agreed that she’s dyslexic but the school just seem to be dragging their feet, is this for funding purposes? I’ve recently found out that she’s sitting spelling tests with the rest of the class which I’m fuming about. Can anyone give me some advice?

Whereabouts is the school? You don’t mention the area. I would suggest getting her privately assessed, then request a meeting with the SENCO and form teacher to go through the report and implement all of the suggestions. We did this with our DS and it worked. Once there is a formal diagnosis it speeds up things dramatically.

Sorry it’s in Bilston West Midlands. It was the senco that said it would be sorted.

You won't get a dyslexia diagnosis from the school in this area at 6. You need to speak to the senco and class teacher; what are her individual targets, what intervention is she having, how did she do on national phonics test. Ask these questions.
I wouldn't worry about her taking part in the spelling tests, everyone will be doing them.

I worry because she lacks confidence and was told she wouldn’t be doing them I hate to think that she’s sitting in class watching everyone else having no idea. She is behind where she should be massively she’s doing reception and year one work, she’s has sensory snacks and one to one apparently.
