What about the gravitational pull of the moon causes the tides to go in and out? ( I think?)

It stops us from floating away.
First discovered by Einstein in 1907 but work not widely published.
Newton is meant to have discovered it (again) when an apple fell on his head.
There's less gravity on some planets than others.
If gravity were fractionally stronger or weaker, then there might not have been the stable elements to form the planet and life on earth.

not meant to be posting on education threads but wanted to help

the moon has only one sixth and the gravity that earth has

on jupiter, gravity is 200-250% (depends which source you read)of earth gravity - ie if you weigh 100 pounds on earth you will weigh 200-250 pounds on jupiter. So don;r go to jupiter if you are on a diet lol

gravity determines your weight (see jupiter thing above) but not your mass (how much 'stuff' you are made of) - your mass will never change on jupiter or the moon

HTH - tried to keep it at a very simple level so it doesnt sound like someone has done dd's homework for her!

gravity is a force which pulls objects in the direction of the centre of the earth (not downwards as many children say....)
