DS is sitting common entrance for his selected school at 13+

Obvs anxious time so I am wondering what happens if he doesn’t get the required grade.

Did he pass a pre test for his senior school ? If your DS is sitting the exam at his prep school then I wouldn't worry. They would have spoken to you if they had any concerns . Best of luck to your DS.

He did the pre-test 2 years ago.

He has to get 70% in his CE.

Frankly the prep hasn’t performed too well since the head changed so I’m concerned.

How long has the head been in place ? Have boys failed to reach the pass mark despite having a conditional offer in previous years?

It is VERY unusual for a student who was successful in a pre test to not make the required grade at CE. Unless the prep has gone completely down the drain, they should have warned you if he looked as if he was not going to make the grade - and even the most competitive schools have a bit of wriggle room to allow for a poor performance on the day.

So I would relax.

If the worst comes to the worst there will be a place for a bright boy at another school. There is lots of movement at 13+ as families decide on other routes at the last moment.
