Missing last week of Y6

Just that really. DD is horse mad and has a great opportunity to go to a horse camp but it’s in Europe so based on their holidays- it would mean she misses a week off school. This is the last week of the year and just so happens to be her Y6 year. She’s been there since reception and isn’t going to the same secondary as any of them. She’s upset at missing the assembly but she’s also upset at missing the horse camp so I don’t think it’s fair to make her decide and we will do it for her but just want to get other points of view.
I will be speaking to the class teacher to see if the leaving video they record is before she goes, and if she could say goodbye before. One half of me says it’s no big deal and let her go, it’s an amazing opportunity, but the other half thinks it’s cruel to not let her experience the end of year 6.
Idk.

I've taught Y6 several times before and there's nearly always at least one child who misses the end of term. It's not that big a deal.

SchoolPanicTime · 27/05/2019 12:03

I would honestly just let her decide. She must be almost 11 and about to go to secondary school so will probably not want to be infantilised. I would find out exactly what she's going to miss so she can make an informed decision.

malmontar · 27/05/2019 13:52

She is 11 but she has said she doesn’t want to decide. I will find out from her teacher what the plan is for the last couple of weeks so we know clearly what she would miss and can help her write out a list of pros and cons. I’m just concerned she will stay and realise it wasn’t actually that big of a deal and not worth missing the horse camp for.

If they are doing a Year 6 production, please tell the teacher BEFORE the auditions...

malmontar · 27/05/2019 23:19

🙄 I hadn’t thought of that one, thank god for your very relevant to my question comment.

My daughter is missing the last week of year 6 also so she's not alone. The big thing is the leavers assembly but she is going to high school with most of her friends.

ineedaholidaynow · 27/05/2019 23:22

Are there other horse camps she could go on?

KingscoteStaff · 27/05/2019 23:25

Ok, well at my school she would miss:
Year 6 production performances
Sports Day
Year 6 Leavers’ Disco
Year 6 Leavers’ Assembly and presentation of Leavers’ Books and T-shirts
Mass signing of and writing messages in Leavers’ Books
Traditional picnic and water fight in park after final day finishes

JellySlice · 28/05/2019 00:20

Camp, without a shadow of a doubt.

My dc3 missed the last days of Y6 to go on a Scout camp. He did not regret it at all.

malmontar · 28/05/2019 06:35

She’s in a inner London state school, the only thing she would miss is this assembly and potentially this video but I’m struggling to believe they get it done in a week as its always very impressive so I will check with her teacher. They don’t sign T-shirt’s or get books or a disco.
@ineedaholidaynow she’s been invited to this and it’s pretty competitive so she is likely not going to get this opportunity again. I could ask her if she just wants to go to a pony camp instead later in the summer.

@whereforartthoubray this makes me feel better. She has another 2 weeks to decide so I will check with teacher in the meantime as to exactly what she’d miss.

@jellyslice
Thank you! Ok glad he enjoyed it. I can see that some schools really go all out with this end of Y6, half the kids at her school are FSM so we don’t even get asked for a contribution towards anything, it’s all very simple and her class is a bulge class so she’ll be one of 90 in this video.

Do they do leavers’ hoodies? These can be very popular, had to pretty much surgically remove it from DS so I could wash it!

malmontar · 28/05/2019 11:05

Unfortunately no, no budget for it and they’re too pricey for most parents.

IME with 3dc across 3 schools:
Year 6 production performances, Sports Day, Year 6 Leavers’ Disco - all take a lot of staff involvement, so are got out of the way before the last week.
Leavers’ Books and T-shirts - often (not always) handed out in class before the last week, to give children time to go around signing. Never had any kind of presentation ceremony.
Hoodies - if the child's not around when they are handed out, it can be picked up earlier or later, ds got his before he left.

The only things ds missed were the Year 6 Leavers’ Assembly and the pool party at the school pool that afternoon.

@jellyslice very good points! Thank you so much you’ve been very helpful. I will speak to her teacher after half term and see what she will miss and make sure teachers know in advance of absence if she decides to go.

Thank you all for your helpful advice.
