Private Schools in York

Hi. We have decided (and are very fortunate to be considering) moving our children to private school for back end of primary into senior school in York. We have looked around a few and are now torn! Negative stereotypes I have heard: St Peters - too elitist, more pressured (Sat school from 8), less supportive if you aren't a top performer. Bootham - wishy-washy, ill-disciplined. Pocklington - weaker than other two, old-fashioned. Would love these stereotypes to be tested by people who know what they are talking about, i.e. not me!

There are lots of threads on this if you do a search. I remember a recent one.

Just stay away from The School Whose Name We Dare Not Say Grin.

You may not be able get in to St Peter's until 11/13....think it's quite full. You need to look around them all as they are quite different and see which would suit your child/ethos best. I wouldn't send a child who isn't bright to St P's.

May I ask if you made any decisions, OP? We went to the recent open days for Bootham and SP. Liked both schools but totally different. SP probably more suited to ours. Also concerned about stereotypes. Hear good things from parents at both though.

Not so many comments on here from parents though, mostly second hand

I would pick Bootham or The Mount if girls only ok. Not St. Peter's

If you have girls the The Mount is a really really lovely and happy school. Small enough that they can push all pupils to reach their potential but not so academically selective that it makes a very artificial environment.

St Peters the best by far

Bootham parent here, so going to side with them!

Bootham, Peters and Cundall are all good schools.
What I will say is that one can't say that one school is better, necessarily, as the school needs to suit your child.
Peters will be better for some children and Bootham will be better for others.
If my child had a different personality then I'd have no problem choosing Peters.

@Bumpylady, what criteria are you judging Peters being the best on?

Minster is worth looking at if your children are still primary aged.
