"Spelling is just a bunch of memorization." No, it isn't a bunch of anything. Not only can these people not spell, they can't construct a logical sentence, either!

Leave American English to the Yanks, I say.

with you on this one

Simplified spelling. They mean incorrect spelling.

Mad. You can't decide to change an entire language. Language evolves yes, but you can't just sit down and decide to change the whole bloody thing. Crackers. Sorry. Krakerz.

Did cod write some of that article, btw?!

Oooo ? I could have fun with this ?
How would you spell scone ? scon or scoan?
How would you know if a character in a book were having a little wine or a little whine?
Or tell the difference between ?her hare was brown? and ?her hair was brown?
Or ?do not climb on the yew? and ?do not climb on the ewe?
Surely it is easier to understand:
?which witch rode down the road??
than:
?wich wich rode down the rode??

Any more?

Not more but I am intrugued but the simplified spelling "butiful" for beautiful - surely logically one would pronounce this like "butterful"? Or is that just me?

FCH · 10/07/2007 17:40

Obviously I am intrigued, and equally obviously should not be commenting on spelling!

coffeepot · 10/07/2007 17:46

intreegd perhaps!
I'ld pronounce "butiful" as bootiful
I think beautiful would have to be
beootiful which is anyway nearly as complex
as beautiful.

This happens reasonably often - GBS wanted to simplify English spelling, and even he didn't succeed.

There are arguments for keeping our stupid spelling system - it's accent-neutral. It helps distinguish homonyms, and the history of words (what language they came from) can be seen in their spelling.
