Best scottish independent schools

Which schools are generally considered the best/most highly-regarded prep and senior (or all-through) schools in Scotland please?

You’ll probably get more responses by posting in Scotsnet. Are you looking at Edinburgh or Glasgow etc? Day school for primary then boarding for high school (and with that comes the Scottish curriculum vs A levels etc)?

GrammerlyH · 19/01/2019 18:11

I didn’t even realise there was a scotsnet, thank you! Preferably rural, preferably offering GCSEs and A Level and preferably offering day as well as boarding - but as a general overview I am really interested in which Scottish independent schools are generally considered ‘the best’ (in the same way that people talk about Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Radley, Sherborne, etc). Thank you.

Fettes college I think it is called.

QuaterMiss · 19/01/2019 19:01

Hmm Generally people want to know which school might be 'best' for a particular child ...

CatalogueUniverse · 19/01/2019 19:10

Most the private schools are in cities and non-Scottish examination board cuts your options down further.

Boys or girls?

BlessedbetheFruitLoops2 · 19/01/2019 19:15

Gordonstoun is a good bet

londonmummy2 · 19/01/2019 19:26

Fettes or Gordonstoun

GrammerlyH · 19/01/2019 19:32

@QuaterMiss as I said, I am interested in a general overview and interested to know general perception - if I give too many details about what I am looking for, then I won’t get a broad overview - and that’s really what I’m looking for with this post. Thanks all.

Strathallan and Glenalmond meet your criteria.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 19/01/2019 19:35

St George's School for Girls in Edinburgh is a day/boarding school. I believe it has the best result of all Scottish schools. It does both the Scottish and English exams.

WickedGoodDoge · 19/01/2019 19:43

Fettes and St George’s are both in Edinburgh so don’t meet the rural criteria. I’d agree with Glenalmond, Strathallan and Gordonstoun (though Gordonstoun is for the name). St Leonard’s in St Andrews is good too- not rural but not big city.

CatalogueUniverse · 19/01/2019 19:46

St George’s in the city and does Scottish exams.

CatalogueUniverse · 19/01/2019 19:51

WickedGoodDoge has summed it up. Choice of 4 really if you only want all through, rural and GCSE/A level.

GrammerlyH · 19/01/2019 19:56

Thanks everyone, that’s really helpful.

The best parents want the best fit school for their own child, not just to send their child to the "best school" for prestige reasons 🙄

GrammerlyH · 19/01/2019 20:49

@wardrobeincrisis Thank you but you’re just showcasing the worst of mumsnet. I clearly stated my question and and am very grateful to those posters who have replied. There is no need to judge my parenting skills. If you don’t have anything helpful to say, just don’t reply.

I tihnk I had heard that George H one in Edinburgh was good - I just looked it up and found the link above but that is in a city. You tend to find schools in citires (in Scotland and England) get better exam results because there are more brighter people located there so more competing for scare places (and most parents do not want boarding schools these days for various reasons)

WickedGoodDoge · 19/01/2019 21:25

Xenia, all of those schools offer the Scottish curriculum and OP has specified they want the English curriculum.

WickedGoodDoge · 19/01/2019 21:26

(The schools in the article, that is)

Piebeansandchips · 19/01/2019 21:37

Strathallan, Glenalmond & Gordonstoun are all rural and offer GCSE & A Levels.

Piebeansandchips · 19/01/2019 21:43

Oh and Gordonstoun probably gets the better reputation due to the royal connection (albeit unhappy for him)

GrammerlyH · 19/01/2019 21:55

Thank you all

Have a look at kilgraston on perthshire. Highly recommended

Piebeansandchips · 19/01/2019 22:19

Kilgraston is only girls and follows the Scottish exams curriculum
