Dyslexia

My son who is 10 has been assessed and confirmed as dyslexic.

To be honest the signs have been there for many years but school have had to go through the usual processes first. Plenty of support for him at school.

I sat with him to try and explain but he flatly refuses to discuss it or accept that he is dyslexic. I’ve not pushed it as he’s getting quite upset. To be fair I didn’t expect this reaction. I half expected him to play on it and start saying he couldn’t do things because of it.

At the moment I’ve left it that if he wants to talk I am here but should I be doing anything else? We are in Scotland and he is in primary 6 so he goes to high school in August 2020.

My son was diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia a couple of years ago. He is P6 now. We never really use the words dyslexia and dysgraphia now. We just focus on what are the methods that help him. You might find that your son is more open to discussing it when he realises he is not alone and there are lots of other students who also have dyslexia. Maybe at high school he will meet lots of other students who are open about dyslexia and what it means for them.

I must admit I am really worried about how my ds will cope with high school. How are you feeling about your ds having dyslexia?

Sorry I think 'being dyslexic' is what I should have said. Having dyslexia does not sound right. It is something I am not very used to saying.

High school is a real worry for me. I just don’t think he’s going to be ready but school never stops does it!

He’s doing his best and all his teachers have confirmed that which is great.

We’re just going to leave it open that he can ask us at anytime and not to be worried.
