Best schools in Wolverhampton

Hi. We would be relocating to Wolverhampton soon. My elder son will start year 10 in September. Can anyone share experience of secondary schools in Wolverhampton. My son is very bright and I want to get him in good academic school. Wolverhampton grammar is too expensive. Reviews for Heath park and Moseley park are good but the reviews for Heath town and Bilston areas are not good. Is it safe to live in Heath town with young kids? I also want advice for good primary schools for my younger one. I am really worried. can anyone please give some suggestions.

The Royal Wolverhampton school used to be fed paying but is now a free school, although it’s been a long time since my children went there

Heath Town is not unsafe but not the best area with children. A lot of student housing is in HT it's also close to the football so parking and driving through can be a nightmare on match days.

I'd certainly look at the Royal, and possibly investigate housing near by because it is a pig to get to from some areas.

Bilston - I did a single day supply teaching maths, a year 9 student asked me, "Miss do you take it up the bum?".

Some children from Wolverhampton go to Birmingham grammar schools and there is also Thomas Telford, they have some places allocated to Wolverhampton students.

You could try Thomas Telford and Adams Grammar School, though they are still both 20 miles from Wolverhampton.

The Old Swinford Hospital Boarding School is a state school about 14 miles away

Queen Mary's Grammar school and Handsworth Grammar Schools are both attended by children from Wolverhampton.

Of course you'd have to see if a) they have any places and b) your son would have to sit an entrance exam

My son is at Handsworth Grammar and there are boys who come from Wolverhampton on the tram - it’s about 20-30 mins I think. It’s a good school but I’m not sure if any spaces would come up in year 10. Queen Mary’s in Walsall is more difficult to get to by public transport.

What about St Peter’s Collegiate? I think that’s the best comprehensive. Again, places might be your issue.

PS Adams Grammar and Thomas Telford are a long way but there are school buses from Wolverhampton - although these also tend to be over subscribed!

They will offer you a place at the nearest school that’s available I believe.
