Summer or winter uniform for first day in Reception next week?

I know this is probably really dumb - but how do I know which uniform to send DD to school in next week? I don't want her to be the only one in the wrong one and the school is closed till her first day so I have no one to ask!

KateandtheGirls · 31/08/2004 14:14

Depends on the weather, doesn't it?

codswallop · 31/08/2004 14:15

exaclty bit fort he rest of you dont buy summer stuff -t hey will maybe wear it fro 2 eeks then it willbe to small

marialuisa · 31/08/2004 14:23

Not sure if this helps but at DD's school they HAVE to wear summer uniform until after half-term.

Did you have to get her uniform (or any parts of it) from a special shop? If so, they might be able to tell you what the norm is.

Reception in our school almost all go in winter uniform for the first term. There may be a couple who have elder siblings so have hand-me downs of summer uniform to go back in. But in the main definitely winter.
I know my ds1 did. However in year 1 he went back in summer uniform, because we bought it the summer term of reception. Same again this year.

If weather is good (of course it will be when they go back to school!!) just leave off the jumper.

Mixed here - DD1 (Year 4) is going back in her winter uniform of shirt/grey skirt and sweatshirt.

DS1 (Year 2) is going back in his shorts from last term.

DD2 starts next Monday and she's going in her Summer dress - I picked up 2 for a £1 as the School Summer Fete (mint condition).

Not a dumb question and I know how you would not want you dd to be the only one in different clothes.

My dd was in reception last year and I sent her in on her first day in her new winter uniform.

The problem was it was still SO warm (after that lovely Summer) and she was boiling hot! After a day or two I noticed others in reception had reverted to the Summer dress they wear (the older ones had gone straight in wearing it). I was lucky in that a friend had passed on a dress that my dd could wear for the little while it took for the weather to cool down.

I'm going for the Summer dress option when dd starts back tomorrow tbh as the school were relaxed about it last year (finally the weather turns nice now the holidays are over!).

Any Mum's you could check with or neighbours with children at the school? To be on the safe side, if I you can't confirm either way, I'd go for the winter outfit just in case, and see what everyone else is up to on the day.

Hope she has a good first day

same as marialuisa here, dd has to wear summer uniform until half term, so no choice for us... In your shoes, I would send her in summer uniform, I know she probably won't wear it for more than a few weeks, but she will be more comfortable. Just get it big enough to last in the spring (dd's summer dresses have lasted since last september and will be worn again this autumn, and she has certainly grown!)
Good luck whatever you go for, hope she has a good first day!

beachyhead · 31/08/2004 15:29

I'd tend towards summer if you have it (which I guess you have; otherwise you wouldn't have asked and winter if you haven't got it. Its bound to be a bit of a mixed bag if the school haven't told you...

lou33 · 31/08/2004 15:36

Dd1 doesn't have a summer dress for secndary school, so she can go in trousers or a skirt, it's up to her on the day. Dd2 is just chaging schools from infant to junior, so I am sending her in winter uniform, because I don't want to buy a summer dress for what may be only a week, only to find it doesn't fit her next summer. Ds1 won't wear shorts to school, so he will be in the usual summer/winter uniform , trousers, polo shirt and a sweatshirt.

janinlondon · 31/08/2004 15:59

Thanks everyone. I was just worried that I was the only one in the world who didn't know this! I called the uniform shop as advised (thank you Marialuisa)and they told me that most of the children come up from the nursery (which DD did not attend) and so will have summer uniforms. Which I guess would kind of mark my DD out as "a new girl" if she wore the winter one. Why are these silly little questions the ones that keep me awake at night???

Glad it's resolved! And BTW, I spent ages wondering whether DD should have the navy wool coat or navy anorak. she shivered until I had sussed that girls at her school where wool coats and boys wear anoraks....

janinlondon · 31/08/2004 16:38

Oh Marialuisa I know exactly what you mean. I am now worrying about whether she has to wear the blazer with the summer uniform or if the cardigan is enough. (If I had my way she'd be wearing every single piece of the uniform I have had to buy - just to get maximum use out of it!!)

Im waiting to see what the weather is like on the day, Im lucky in a way cos he went to the schools nursery which had a uniform so I have the summer stuff anyway. Im hoping it will be nice and he can wear his shorts. He now has a blazer, jumper and fleece, I think the blazer is compulsary though. I hate blazers on little ones, especially at over £60.00 a go. He leaves this private school at Christmas to go to a state school so I only have to bear it for one term.

runningsuzie · 31/08/2004 17:11

My two girls love putting on their new uniforms (winter) new skirt, new tops, new jumper that's better than putting on their old summer dresses. That's what my 9 year old tells me anyway.

nutcracker · 31/08/2004 17:17

Mine will go in their winter stuff as they will be dying to wear it.

I'm sure last year though i did send dd in her summer stuff after a couple of days as it was still so warm. No chance of that this year by the looks of things.

candy · 31/08/2004 20:38

M & S had summer dresses for £3 last week so mine will be going in those - at that price it doesn't matter if they only wear them for a few weeks and the little one will wear big sister's hand me down next summer!

blossomhill · 31/08/2004 20:47

Last year ds went in shorts but as the weather is bad both dd and ds will be going in grey winter stuff!

JanH · 31/08/2004 20:52

DS2 would have gone back to primary school in shorts and trainers, but he is starting sec school so it will be long pants, blazer and proper shoes...booo....
