Does anyone hate math like me? It's very difficult :(

Sorry but I love it, I was hoping you were going to ask me to solve an equation.

lljkk · 27/10/2018 05:30

yeah, another math love her. Worse, I have a recently developed swooning affection for statistics. There's no hope for some of us. Wink

  • "lover here".... too parsimonious in words, I guess.
marcopront · 27/10/2018 05:36

No I love Maths but I hate art.
Should I start a thread saying that?

JustRichmal · 27/10/2018 09:50

I think in the past a lot of children have had a very bad introduction to maths at school. I find reading difficult because of not being taught well when young.

Do you have a reason for wanting to do maths; for work or to help your children? Or is it just every day maths like wages and mortgage repayments?

I find playing the violin difficult, but, as I never have to do it, it does not bother me. However to play the violin well requires practice and some sort of belief that you are going to be able to learn. Maths is much the same.

I didn't like math until I got to algebra. I also used to hate statistics. We can change, too.

I never realised that maths can be so interesting until recently. All these websites and youtube videos makes it so much easier and fun to learn maths, compared to when I was a child.

I think you can learn to love it!

I didn’t enjoy it at school and have always claimed to be bad at it, but actually I got a reasonable grade at GCSE so can’t be all that bad. I do struggle with times tables and mental arithmetic as my memory is poor and trying to hold numbers in my head stresses me out.

I have developed a respect and love for maths since having kids. I wanted to be able to help with their homework, and not to keep telling them I’m bad at maths. So I have relearned loads of stuff in order to be able to support the kids’ homework, andI have found a love and appreciation for the beauty and brilliance of maths! It’s never too late for an epiphany 😀

CherryPavlova · 02/11/2018 08:06

I’ve always enjoyed numbers, patterns, puzzles and loved maths at school. I still use maths a lot (mainly statistics) in daily life.
My children also love maths but my husband is less keen and finds calculations and interpretation of data more challenging.

FredFlinstoneMadeOfBones · 02/11/2018 14:16

I love maths but know lots of highly intelligent people who hate it. Sometimes it's just not their thing sometimes because they found it difficult (due to teaching method or just because it's not where their abilities lie) and it made them feel stupid or anxious.

BackforGood · 03/11/2018 00:15

No, I like maths. It is logical, and follows the rules. Don't need to rely on someone's 'opinion' to get top marks.

TeenTimesTwo · 03/11/2018 20:46

I love maths too. Sorry. Smile
I think you needed a different title for your thread to find the maths haters. I think usually people hate maths because they got 'lost' somewhere along the line and never recovered.

PurpleDaisies · 03/11/2018 20:51

It’s daft to say you hate a subject isn’t it? We never say “ I hate history”. That would be mad!

I hate most history (including everything I did in school). I find it tedious.

Maths is beautiful. I love maths.

user789653241 · 03/11/2018 21:04

OP, maybe you should try site like khanacademy
You never know, you might fell in love with learning maths as an adult, like I did.

LucyMorningStar · 03/11/2018 21:25

Love it, did it at uni and would do Msc and PhD in it if I won the lottery.

There is always an answer and it's either right or wrong. No room for ambiguity. It's just perfect!

LucyMorningStar · 03/11/2018 21:27

I also hate history by the way Grin sleep inducing and who knows wether what we're being taught is true? It's just somebody's version of events. Maths can be proven. History is guesswork.

savagebaggagemaster · 03/11/2018 21:29

My df is a retired mathematician. I couldn't do it at school and now dd is the same. I think teaching was maths well is a real challenge. Dh and ds find it easy and enjoy it! I sometimes wonder if there is a secret maths genius hiding inside me...?

user789653241 · 04/11/2018 08:02

I was more of history lover than maths lover when I was student myself. I never tried to understand maths properly before, I had a belief that it's hard and never bothered.
Now I get what people say about maths. I had a light bulb moment that I can do it. It's still hard, but learning is very fulfilling.

Namenic · 06/11/2018 22:02

I did well at a level but feel I didn’t really understand a lot of calculus and stats. Would like to go back to it (now there is lots of online courses/material). Luckily DH did maths at uni so can help. Maybe will repeat a level when my kids do it - in sympathy.
