private senior schools doing tag rugby

Is this a new thing? My dc doesn't do rugby at school, but I noticed some teams doing tag rugby matches the other day. They were y9 matches.
Has a new recommendation come out? I must say that I think it's a good idea for some teams where dc aren't really into rugby.

It is usually either kids who have parents who have opted them out of contact or less able players.

I understand that at Radley rugby is compulsory in the first year (yr 9 equivalent), but their lower teams play non-contact, which I think is probably a very good idea. Accidents are much more likely to happen when skill levels aren't great!

I have just opted for my YR6 child to only do tag (there is one team doing this, the rest doing contact). This was his choice.

My DS does this as is unable to play contact due medical reasons but loves sport, his friends that dont like sport have to do it as the school is keen on sport Grin but its safer for the less skilled/interested
it isnt the same and sometimes ds wistfully looks at the full rugby lot and they have the tours/matches etc but its not the end of the world and he understands why! keeps them in the fresh air and running around....he's hoping he will be able to learn to ref

Pythonesque - yes this was at Radley. I like the fact that although they have to do the one term of rugby, that it is non contact for the lower teams.
