Amount of maths taught in year 5

How many maths lessons a week do your children receive in year 5? My child's school has barely taught maths in the last eight weeks; maybe 1, or at the most 2, lessons a week but some weeks there have been no lessons. There is no homework and when the children go in first thing they either do reading or wordsearches. I feel very disappointed as my daughter is so weak in maths and I feel this is largely down to such inconsistent teaching. I have expressed my concern to the school a few weeks ago but they did not take it seriously. Many thanks for any replies.

Are you sure?? I cannot believe any state school is getting away with that. What are the school's results like? This time in Y5 they are usually getting going on the SATs prep.

Hi, thanks for your reply, yes I am sure. Their results are very good for Yr6. I don't know how they achieve that. Other parents are saying how inconsistent the maths teaching has been and that they have had to get in tutors.

Y5 - 7 periods of maths a week every week. They have done some less formal maths over the last couple of weeks - outdoors, measuring things, recapping things and lots of fun maths but I would expect the teaching to continue (more or less) to the end of term.

If what you say is right I would be raising it with the school and trying to understand what's happening. I'm not a maths teacher but it strikes me as one of those subjects that needs to be done regularly and consistently to build knowledge, understanding and application.

I'm a Y5 teacher and we do Maths for an hour every day.

DD is y5 and at least 1 session of maths daily, sometimes they have 2 sessions.
I thought they had to do maths daily.

My ds is in year 5 and the maths content has been crazily full. They did have a bad year 4 so possibly playing catch up a bit but the pace and quantity of the material has been astonishing.

I think you may have just discovered how they achieve such good results!

At ours, the whole school does a minimum of an hour a day. That's on top of any extra topic-related activities that may include maths.
